MYFOXNY.COM - A nine year old cat survived a 14-story plunge from an Upper West Side apartment building.
The Lang family moved to a building on West 64th St. and West End Ave. about a month ago with their pet Copper.
Angela Lang says their apartment's windows don't open far and they never thought she could get through them. Copper proved them wrong and got out onto the ledge; but fell.
They thought she was on top of a parking garage next to the building but there was no access to the roof. Nine hours later, the building supervisor used a fork lift to get to the top of the garage and found her.

This isn’t uncommon. Cats are more likely to be hurt in a short fall than a long one. In a short fall they may not be able to turn and land right. In a long fall, they instinctively right themselves and spread out like a skydiver, then position their legs to take the impact at the last moment. Truly one of God’s most amazing critters.

From what I’ve read, there is a 90% survival rate and less injury when the fall from a building is greater than seven stories.

At approximately 140ft, this tells me that the cat reached terminal velocity. That means that a cat can survive a fall from ANY height.

I like how in the second frame he looks like he's saying "Students, observe closely..."

Unless you butter their backs, then they behave like a slice of toast. ;)

My poor brother’s poor little cat Fritter did not survive her fall, I think she fell 16 stories.
I’m glad this kitty made out better.
Oh it was so sad, my mother died, then Fritter died, then my brother died.
Sorry if I’m over sharing, that cat dying was just such a bad omen.

FWIW, the stats about cats surviving long falls are questionable: They are compiled from veterinarians' records, and cats who die on impact don't get taken to the vet.
