Proceeds from the sale of the World Series trophy and MVP award will go to the Kirk Gibson Foundation to support Michigan State athletics and to help fund partial scholarships at the two Michigan high schools where his parents taught...
After going through the stuff, he decided he was ready to part with the famous home run bat, batting helmet and home and road uniforms from the 1988 World Series.
The uniform he wore when he hit that home run off Oakland's Dennis Eckersley has never been washed. Why? "That's just the way it is," he said.
The bat's appearance is "unbelievable," Gibson said. "There's so much character in it."
"If you look at the handle on the end of that bat, there's an 'x' because it was a reject. I really only got it because it was so light, I was hurt, so I started to get that ready," he said. "The cleat marks at the head of the bat where I hit my shoes, there's indentations at the beginning of the bat.
"At the end of the bat, it was so deep, there's really deep indentations, the red ink from the foul balls I hit is on it. You can actually see the spot where I made contact with the ball. It's preserved very well." ...
The items will be sold by Internet auction Oct. 27-Nov. 13 by SCP Auctions, the company that sold the bat Babe Ruth used to hit his first home run at Yankee Stadium for $1.265 million and the contract of the sale of Ruth from the Boston Red Sox to the Yankees for US$996,000.
Interestingly, none of the material from Gibson's days with the Detroit Tigers is for sale.
"I have my reasons," Gibson said. "We'll just leave it at that."

:’)
"I'll give ya 250 bucks for it".
Texas is sending out Tommy Hunter, a 13-game winner in the regular season, to the Yankee Stadium mound this evening to face New York's A.J. Burnett in Game 4 of the AL championship series. The Rangers have won two in a row after dropping the opener.
LOL, Then I’m going to have get it refinished and I don’t know how long it will just sit in the shop, etc, etc ;^)
I would guess he needs the cash.
Love Pawn Stars! I can’t decide if Chumlee really is that stupid or if he’s playing for the cameras.
Still a sour spoiled dickhead, after all these years.
:’D
I loved that... Gibby was a total jackass a lot of the time, he was tight with one of the locals here, but wouldn’t speak to anyone the other guy knew when they ran into them. Maybe he was just shy? Yeah, that must be it. ;’) In the article Gib also says he’s been making progress in his relationship with the press and with the fans, and now with the collectors.
Probably a little of both. I'd say 60% of that show is an act. I'm sure the transactions are real(most of them), but the rest is just playing for the cameras. Still fun to watch though.
Hey Kirk, ever given a free autograph to a kid in a McDonald's yet?????
He's one of the biggest off field jackasses ever to play the game.............
Hall of Fame.
:’) He’s as likeable as Pee Wee Herman — compared with Ty Cobb. Ty Cobb killed two hecklers with his bare hands and still was one of the original Hall of Fame inductees, with his last record left standing until Pete Rose finally broke it.
Must be a tax savings to move it before 2011.
I am mystified as well. I don’t understand not keeping the bat and uniform, et al. He cannot be in need of the money.
Here’s a possible insight, though. Gibson was mentioned several times, by fans and bloggers, as a possible new manager for the Dodgers. It turns out, pending Torre’s retirement, the Dodgers did not even hold interviews as they had agreed to a special clause in Torre’s contract last Spring. The clause? That they would hire Don Mattingly as the next manager.
The Dodgers had to request a waiver on the interview process from Bud Selig, and they received it. Normally, MLB teams are required to hold interviews and include minority applicants. Mattingly, who has never managed, has been given a 3-year contract.
Anyway, the whole thing stinks of cronyism, favoritism, etc. I’m sure Gibson got wind of all this.
We have problems in Dodgertown.
I’m curious about why he isn’t selling anything from his days with the Tigers.
