Geology Picture of the Week, September 12-18, 2010: Badlands of Colombia
Panoramio ^

Posted on 09/18/2010 8:45:38 PM PDT by cogitator

These are near the volcano Nevado del Huila, southwest of Bogota. I wouldn't normally think of Colombia as a semi-desert environment, but these high alpine mountain basins can be pretty dry. [Click for full-size.]

I LOVE travel & have not been able to do much the past couple decades.. so the internet & cinema are my ways to compensate

Wow, that first photo is so bizarre that it’s difficult to apply scale.

Legend has it that there is a “black mountain” in Columbia loaded with fist sized emeralds. The only white man to have seen this mountain came back with a pocket full of such beauties and a description of the mountain. After being hopelessly lost in the jungle for an extended period of time, however, he was unable to pinpoint the mountain’s location. I wonder what kind of treasures lie in those badlands?

The Guajira in the NE...my old stomping grounds of Rioacha and Maicao are dry as a bone 95% of the time

bleached trees and arroyos and sandy soil..and lots of death

If it’s Helen Thomas, I really don’t want to know what that second picture is!

That is a LOT of volcanic ash! So the main treasures might be acres of petrified wood.

DollyCali,
Just a couple of things,
You have the best about page I’ve seen and I ALWAYS check out folks about page when I post to them.
If I die, can I come back as one of your pets?
They all look happier than 99.9 percent of the folks in this world.
One can see they have had great lives.
One more thing, you’ve a beautiful family, you are proud and it shows,

good grief .. how very VERY sweet of you. Thank you.

I guess I am devoted to my family, pets, faith & political walk..

And I just checked your page (HA, payback). LOVE Fla. lived there on 3 different occasions. Just here back in Ohio to caregive mom. If God provides, would like to eventually return to the ocean & warmer climate.

I took care of My Grandparents.
Pop with alzheimers for 8 years and Mam for 11.
She didn’t have that but still was crazy as a bed bug.
Miss both more than I ever thought I would.
They both taught me so very much.
