Aside from the circumstances of her birth, Virginia Dare’s life remains a mystery.

Virginia Dare's parents, Ellinor and Ananias Dare, were among 150 English colonists who sailed for Virginia in May, 1587, under the sponsorship of Sir Walter Raleigh. The 120 settlers landed in Virginia in July, 1587, at Roanoke Island, rather than the intended Chesapeake Bay target.

Less than a month after landing, Ellinor Dare, who was daughter of the colonist's Governor John White, gave birth to Virginia Dare. Baby Virginia's grandfather, Gov. White, left for England on August 27, when she was nine days old, to seek help and support for the colonists. He arrived in England that November as the nation was about to go to war with Spain. It was not until August 1590 that White reached Roanoke with a relief expedition. It found no trace of the settlers—only the the letters "croatoan" carved on a post. The infant Virginia Dare had vanished along with all the other Roanoke colonists.

Nothing is known of the fate of Virginia Dare, her parents, or the other Roanoke colonists, sometimes called the "Lost Colony." The most common theory is that the surviving colonists became assimilated into local Indian tribes.

Roanoke Island must have been a malarial swamp 400 years ago. Not the best of places to start a colony.

How old is the name “Virginia”? School books state Virginia was named after Queen Eliz I, the “virgin queen”, but does that mean that that is when the name is first used? Or is Virginia a much older name? Just wonderin....
