DOUGHNUTS are a better symbol for Easter than the traditional egg, says a leading Tasmanian churchman. The Anglican Dean of Hobart, Richard Humphrey, said he preferred the idea of the Easter doughnut over the traditional Easter egg.
"Eggs don't really have anything to do with Easter but you can attach some rich symbolism to a doughnut," he said.
"They're round like the stone that was rolled away from Jesus's tomb, the tomb was empty, just like the hole in the doughnut, they're shaped like a halo and the circle represents eternal life."
Doughnuts were served in St David's Cathedral yesterday as St David's Anglican Cathedral got messy yesterday when local children were given the run of the place.
The Messy Easter event was based on an idea from churches in the UK called Messy Church, in which children are treated to an afternoon of fun activities inside the church.
"We want the children feeling like this is a comfortable place for them to be," Mr Humphrey said.
"We also want to run a Messy Church here on the first Sunday of every month at 5pm. It's a similar idea, 45 minutes for the adults and children to do this sort of stuff, get a bit messy and feel comfortable about being here."
Activities included music, egg-decorating, play dough and other arts and crafts.
"Easter is a celebration of new life and new beginnings and what better way to do that than to have lots of kids here?" Mr Humphrey said.
Why not a bagel? It has all the noted attributes of a donut, and like Jesus, it’s Jewish!

In the Russian Orthodox tradition they have a cake called paska where the hard boiled egg is right in the cake.
Can't find the image ...but symbolic of fertility they are baked with eggs and then holes are poked in the loaf to hold flower stems for weddings.... usually wild flowers. They are beautiful!
