Travis Lapham of the Blue Earth County Sheriff’s Office provided a feel-good moment for people attending the Blue Earth County Fair Saturday. For people suffering some guilt about eating the chili cheese fries at the 4-H stand or the deep-fried cheese curds at the snack wagon or the chili cheese fries and the deep-fried cheese curds, Lapham outdid them in calories and fat intake. And Lapham managed to do it in less than seven minutes. “I feel really good right now,” Lapham said, just minutes after winning the doughnut-eating contest. There was little indication — other than a quiet belch...

They wore sandwich boards proclaiming, "Give Us Our Just Desserts" and "They're Carbs, Not Contraband." Officials were concerned that the county was setting a...

The "hot doughnut experience." That's the difference between Krispy Kreme and other large doughnut chains. Dunkin' Donuts may be bigger (at least in the East), but nothing stirs the soul like the neon "Hot Doughnuts Now" sign that lights up when Krispy Kreme's famous Original Glazeds come rolling off the line. If you've ever had a doughnut hot out of the fryer, you know how tough it is to stop at just one. Just what we need: an irresistible food that's made of sugarcoated white flour fried in trans-fat-laden oil. Doughnuts are a phenomenon. Fortune magazine recently named the rapidly...

CARMEL, N.Y. - Putnam County wants to stop handing out free doughnuts at senior centers because of health worries, but patrons say they're old enough to decide what they eat. The Office for the Aging has been getting free "day old" doughnuts from local doughnut shops, delis and stores, and then passing them out at the county's five centers. But nutritionists have questioned if the doughnuts are good for the over 65 set, which is susceptible to high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes. The issue has been turned over to the Putnam County Legislature which will debate in the...

Airport security is a serious business, but why was a Reg reader refused a Krispy Kreme doughnut at Heathrow airport? Admittedly, the sugared snacks contain enough cooking oil and sugar to power a trailer park, but who knew they could be fashioned into bombs? On Saturday afternoon a Reg reader was dropping some friends at Heathrow and stopped off at Krispy Kreme doughnuts outside Terminal 3. But the reader was directed to the unstuffed ring doughnuts rather than a full-fat, fully stuffed Krispy Kreme special because the fillings fall foul of security restrictions. "Imagine our confusion when the guy serving...

FRANKLIN, Tenn. -- It's North versus South -- in the doughnut wars. Dunkin' Donuts is a tradition in the Northeast, but the South is Krispy Kreme territory. Now Dunkin' Donuts is testing the waters in the Nashville area with a dozen stores. Now, he's signed on with Dunkin' and is in charge of the Nashville-area operation. He feels there's room for Dunkin' Donuts, Krispy Kreme and even more. He said employees of Starbucks are coming across the street to...

Police officers shot and killed a man who, officials say, was attempting to rob the Dunkin' Donuts at 14631 Pulaski Rd. in Midlothian with his handgun drawn, leaving officers no choice but to shoot him. “We reserve the use of deadly force for extreme circumstances,” Sgt. Moore appeared on stage wearing a suit and tie, no beard or hat and a trim haircut. When asked by Jay Leno about his appearance, Moore quipped, "I thought I should look a little sharper for my IRS audit" and "If you can't beat them, you might as well look like them." Moore told...

Chuck the rice and garters. Go for the glaze instead. The betrothed are forsaking frosted, fluffy tiers at their wedding receptions in favor of a fried yet familiar cake base -- Krispy Kreme doughnuts. Typically a morning ritual or a warm, sinful snack, the popular pastry is emerging as a new core ingredient for wedding cakes and a souvenir from the ceremony. Doughnut-crazed customers conjured up the concoction last year, and the cakes -- along with the token gifts -- have been catching on ever since. "We have had people coming in who buy dozens as departing gifts," said George...
