"It was stated that they repeatedly disregarded the warnings placarded throughout the city that violation of the ordinances for the preservation of law and order would be considered as sabotage of the Reich's interests, therefore subject to the severest punishment."

Amazing. Anyone remember Glen Beck's outrage on SEIU assaults:

Germans drop mines in British waters
Saturday, November 18, 1939 www.onwar.com

In Britain... German planes parachute magnetic mines into British coastal waters for the first time. Four merchant ships are sunk by magnetic mines off the eastern coast. Meanwhile, IRA activists detonate 4 small bombs in London business premises in Piccadilly.

In the North Sea... The Dutch liner Simon Bolivar is sunk by a German magnetic mine with 86 killed of about 400 passengers and crew aboard.

In Holland... Public opinion is outraged because the mine which sunk the Simon Bolivar was in a major traffic lane. International law requires notification of any such mine-laying.

It would be really neat to find one of those Christmas toys! Can’t decide whether I’d prefer Chamberlain bopping Hitler, or Hitler and Goering tilting at the windmill! :)

Thanks much for your work, Homer! Learning this way is fascinating!

Oh, one more thing... Perhaps if they hadn’t been serving hot toddies at the front the French might have fared a bit better??? SERIOUSLY — requiring warm wine of at least 9% alcohol? Doesn’t sound smart to have your infantry drunk all the time!

I don't know - Nelson's tars got a prodigious ration of rum at least once a day. And look how they fared at Trafalgar against the French.

Looks like its time to start degaussing some ships. Or we could always sell the Germans the detonators from the Mark 14 torpedo for their mines.

You have a good point there... I don’t know I guess it’s just the image it conjured in my mind of a bunch of French soldiers sipping on warm wine, getting all toasty at the front with the ladies’ auxillary juxtaposed with what we know happened next that makes it sound so idiotic to me. I mean with how they eventually surrendered France they might as well have had their wine at home!!!

Are any of you watching WWII in HD? I have been watching it all week and it seems to be really. I am very interested in your opinions.

Thanks

I stumbled upon an episode that covered the landing on Guadalcanal. I didn't get to watch very much of it but I liked what I saw. I don't remember seeing any of that footage before. I imagine the History Channel will start running it regularly before long. Like they do with Band of Brothers.

S/S SIMON BOLIVAR

Owned by the Koninklijke Nederlandsche Stoomboot Maatschappij and built in 1927 by the Rotterdam Droogdok Maatschappij; 8,309 tons; 419.9x59.1x27.7 ft. ; 856 n.h.p.; 14 knots; quadruple expansion engine.

On November 18th, 1939, the Dutch liner Simon Bolivar (Capt. H. Voorspuiy), was on a voyage from Holland to Paramaribo, when she struck a mine, off Harwich.

The liner carried 400 passengers and crew. The explosion was very violent and many people on the deck were killed, Capt. Voorspuiy was mortally wounded and died.

The Simon Bolivar’s masts were blown down and she began to settle by the stern. The ship’s radio was damaged by the explosion and the S.O.S. could not be sent out.

Nevertheless, other vessels were quickly on the spot. About 15 minutes after the first explosion, there was a second explosion that badly damaged some of the remaining lifeboats.

According to the ship’s officers, the vessel had struck two mines, one on each side of the ship.

S/S Simon Bolivar finally sank with the loss of 84 lives.

sell the Germans the detonators from the Mark 14 torpedo for their mines.

One of the failings of "too cheap to test" policies.

Watch it very closely. Here's what I saw:

If you're not looking for it, you'll miss it, but the really striking HD cannot possibly be from original film.
