Antarctic ice is growing, not melting away
News.com.au ^ | 04/18/09 | Greg Roberts

ICE is expanding in much of Antarctica, contrary to the widespread public belief that global warming is melting the continental ice cap.

The results of ice-core drilling and sea ice monitoring indicate there is no large-scale melting of ice over most of Antarctica, although experts are concerned at ice losses on the continent's western coast.

Antarctica has 90 per cent of the Earth's ice and 80 per cent of its fresh water, The Australian reports. Extensive melting of Antarctic ice sheets would be required to raise sea levels substantially, and ice is melting in parts of west Antarctica. The destabilisation of the Wilkins ice shelf generated international headlines this month.

However, the picture is very different in east Antarctica, which includes the territory claimed by Australia.

East Antarctica is four times the size of west Antarctica and parts of it are cooling. The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research report prepared for last week's meeting of Antarctic Treaty nations in Washington noted the South Pole had shown "significant cooling in recent decades".

This should throw a little cold water (pun intended) on the global warming hoax. It will be most interesting to watch the Climate Changers spin this paragraph...

"A paper to be published soon by the British Antarctic Survey in the journal Geophysical Research Letters is expected to confirm that over the past 30 years, the area of sea ice around the continent has expanded."

If more ice is forming in the world than is melting then the seas will start to drop and that will show global warming has stopped.

But the sea ice around the shelf is just one part of it. Its the total for the globe that counts.

Well of course it is. Just ask Al Gore and didn’t you see that movie the day after tomorrow? Global warming causes global cooling. ITs becasue as the the earth has a fever it will get cold. Just as when it snow it...a...uh...gets...warmer...and....HELP AL GORE! Tell us what to say! Tell us what to think! It all made sense when we sat through the movie an inconvenient truth! (OK, i did not really ‘see’ the movie. I went to it but fell a sleep.)

Al Gore will but you anti-global-warming-truth-tellers in your place. Like, who cares about the truth anyway.

It’s like when Santana was confronted wearing a Che t-shirt about how he killed a bunch of people, He said “Hey man, you getting hung up on facts”.

As a continent, Antarctica has the highest average elevation, over SEVEN THOUSAND FEET.

And like a mile of that is ice.

From all the reports I’ve heard, all the benchmarks (poles sunk into the ice) used to measure depth have shown it is increasing. Just like the pic of the crane.

pure blasphemy! the computer models show they are shrinking. who needs real world data.

There is no evidence the seas have risen. In fact most of the evidence shows otherwise.

I’m on my first cup of coffee so I can go round and and round on this ...but yeah, the seas have risen for the last century and since the 80’s we’ve had satellite confirmation. When I wake up I’ll find the link for the National Snow and Ice Data Center and the State of the cryosphere report that measure the water freezing versus the ice melting, they combine with that tide gauge data from all over the world for 100 years.

So yeah, very slowly, the seas are rising and it would be a wonderful sign to see that stop or reverse.

I’m too tired for a pithy response but I did want to let you know I appreciated your Al Gore humor.

Ice ages are cold, dry and barren. Inter-glacials are warm wet and abundant.

Bottom line, we’d all be better off if the ice did melt.

If you believe the global warming lobby, the media, and a bunch of UN bureaucrats. If you believe a scientist who actually studies the data longer than all those combined, then maybe the sea levels aren't raising.

Rise of sea levels is 'the greatest lie ever told'

How did you choose to believe this guy instead of the other thousand scientists who say differently?

The so-called scientists are just parroting the fear-mongering from bureaucratic IPCC reports. Point me to good scientific evidence that shows sea-levels raising and not some AP scare piece with some guy spewing a bunch of opinions. There is lots of scare-mongering going on over raising sea-levels, but that is just computer simulated bs. There is very little data which suggest any raising. The satellite data had to be manipulated by some IPCC nut to show raising. If sea-levels were raising people on the coasts would be seeing a lot more evidence, and not just the typical changes from shoreline corrosion.

Ahh so its a massive conspiracy from all the scientists... except this one. I guess they went back and changed all the historical buoy data for a 100 years too.

Seriously, this attitude doesn’t help conservatism it just takes us out of the discussion loop

We are never gonnsa get a voice in trying to stop excessive and enviro-crazy responses to global warming if we deny the warming reality to start with.
