It's been 110 years Monday since the bloody overthrow of Wilmington's black government. Hundreds of residents and local leaders gathered over the weekend to dedicate the 1898 Memorial, marking the only coup d'etat in U.S. history. Many who came to see the memorial called it a step toward reconciliation. And it wasn't lost on Reverend John Veasey that the dedication came less than a week after the U.S. elected its first black president.
"I'm just glad to see what has happened and is going to happen, not only in Wilmington but also in the United States and in the world. Because it's letting the world know who we really are, we are Americans, and so I'm very proud of this day, I'm very proud of my country."
The 1898 Memorial took 12 years to be built. And it was funded entirely from Wilmington businesses and residents, including descendents of the men who planned the bloody coup.

How ironic.
maybe the 0bamicons can pony up some reparations.....
I live in Wilmington. The memorial looks like a bowling alley.
What gets left out of this is that many whites were run out of town and their real estate was siezed for non-payment of taxes.
This was lead by Democrats against Republicans and black professionals.
The book is called “We have Taken the City”. Its a great read.
There were no registered Republicans in Wilmington in 1898.
This was one of the sad days in the history of my state. Its amazing how much people have forgotten this insurrection.
And to few in 2008 the lazy and dumb are gaining but wil not win.
is this when Saly’s Resturant burned down?/?
I first read about this a couple of years ago, and was absolutely astounded that an authentic armed coup like this had occurred. Of course, you never hear or read about it in a history class.
If you consider the various historical depredations against African-Americans by Democrats, it’s clear that nearly the entire bill for reparations should be sent to the DNC.
The mayor was a Republican. But I would guess that there were mighty few registered Republicans after the riot.
I would love to see real proof of that, like the voting records... I may just have to research it.

Another (earlier) successful American coup.

There were several coups and attempted coups in colonial times, in New York, Virginia and other colonies, but they all failed in the long run.
