William Shakespeare's plays were penned by a little known Welsh law clerk, Dyfed ap Davis, it was revealed today.
Because Welshmen were out of favour at the court of Queen Elizabeth 1, Monmouth-born ap Davis bribed the actor William Shakespeare to put his name to what are fallaciously known as the works of the great Bard of Stratford-upon-Avon. They shared the royalties and were often seen drunk together in Covent Garden and Cardiff Bay.
Many of the plays were originally set in Wales but, because of the Queen's preferences, had to be transferred to more exotic climes. The character Hamlet was originally called Taffy Evans and his doomed lover Ophelia was Blodwen the Boobs.
The Merchant of Venice was originally The Market Trader of Merthyr Tydfil and The Taming of the Shrew was entitled The Wooing of the Welsh Rarebit. Much Ado about Nothing was first called, "What's it all about then, Dai, old fruit?"
A clue to ap Davis's authorship comes in Henry V in the character of Fluellen, as follows:
Fluellen: "If your Majesty is remembered of it, the Welshmen did good service in a garden where leeks did grow, wearing leeks in their Monmouth caps, which your Majesty knows, to this hour is an honourable badge of the service, and I do believe, your Majesty takes no scorn to wear the leek upon Saint Tavy's day".
King Henry: "I wear it for a memorable honour; for I am Welsh, you know, good countryman".
How did Shakespeare, an ignorant actor, so skilfully capture the local Monmouthshire dialect, which is still spoken in Monmouth and the hill villages of Trellech and Catbrook with its strong glottal sounds?
Ap Davis died in the Tower of London after the Queen twigged what was going on. Shakespeare was banished to Stratford.
Wales National English Speaking Theatre would not comment, but sounded terribly excited, in spite of today's date.

Actually, Shakespeare’s plays were all written by a different guy who had the same name.
His commentary was that he admitted he was wrong and that the government should raise taxes on the rich.
It was necessary due to the crisis in our economic system.
They he said write this date down on your calendars, April 1st,2008.
Yes that is right, April Fools Days.
..and for those who believe taxes should be raised on the rich every day, you people are fools everyday.
