Turkey Waste Will Power Electric Plant

The gray, sandy mix of turkey droppings and other bits and pieces flowing through Greg Langmo's fingers back onto the floor of his barn isn't just funky dirt, it's fuel.

With 16,000 hens gobbling around him, Langmo is standing on a 15-inch layer of turkey litter - some 750 tons of the stuff - that represents a new source of energy.

It will help fuel a $200 million power plant due to begin full-scale production next month. The 55-megawatt Fibrominn LLC plant will be the first poultry litter-fired power plant in the United States, tapping a novel source of renewable energy to produce enough power for 50,000 homes. Its developers are planning similar plants in other major poultry states.

You know, I saw instructions on how to build a poop converter. It is suppose to work with chickens too.

Let me know if you want that info dug up.

Um...I’ll stick with composting it for my garden. It takes a year or more, but I don’t have to DO anything but let it sit.

Man, that turkey poop converter is going to smell REAL GOOD on a hot, humid August day, LOL!

I live across the road from a pig farm. That’s even worse...though they’re switching over to more cows than pigs now, thank goodness! Cow chit is palpable compared to pig, in my “country bumpkin” opinion. ;)

Isn’t it odd, though? Our “backwards” ancestors knew what to do with every scrap of an animal, from the “Moooo” to the manure. Shows once again how far removed we are from the Natural World today. And it only took two short generations! :(

I read an article on composting animals the other day. It was pretty interesting. A local guy gives a lecture on it; I hope to catch it one day.

As for now, if I have a dead hen I just toss her in the woods and the coyotes do the rest.

Works like a charm. :)

I grew up in NJ and spent almost a decade on rural tours under my husband’s medical track.

I will take cow chit, swine slop, or poultry poop any day over the stench from the NJ Turnpike or all the superfund sites our towns are built up on.

The smell is so bad; it earned it’s own FR keyword search.

Hey Buddy, can you spare 30 tons?

That would give me a 3-4” layer to till into the garden.
