Apple’s Web site has further details about what’s specifically changed in Mac OS X v10.4.9, as well. Highlights include improvements to .Mac sync performance and sync issues; fixes for wake from sleep issues with Bluetooth peripherals; changes to iCal; support for USV Video Class webcams in iChat; iSync support for more devices; WPA2 encryption support in Network Diagnostics; performance issues related to Intel iMacs working on high-speed network switches; improvements to OpenGL graphics reliability in World of Warcraft and more.

The Intel installer is 160MB, definitely not a dial up candidate

This has to be the slowest download.... Is the server getting bombarded??

(I'm on a very fast connection.)

It's downloading quickly for me. I'm listening to the Rush show on my podcast, so not looking forward to having to reboot, but I'll survive.

And I'm still patching the tubes in the old Model 10.3.9...

LOL - you springing for Leopard when it comes out?

I'm gonna be tempted to get a new MacBook to replace the iBook... I have all my justifications ready to go.

Worked fine/fast for me. I had the whole download in less than 7 minutes. The install took longer than the download did.

As word spreads, I would not be surprised if the servers do get hammered.

Guess that explains my crash when I tried to open a RAW file last night.

I may buy a new 20" iMac to replace my little gooseneck machine. My grand daughter has a late PowerPC iBook and my daughter has the last of the PowerPC iMac. Got that one at Costco late last year

2 minutes + download. Slow rebuild during restart; had half a menu bar for a couple of minutes while the computer was thinking.

I want to buy a external had drive for my grand daughter. There are some no/name 250 gig firewire drives on eBay for $100. Staples is about the only choice in Eureka and I have a eBay/PayPal account...

You can download directly. I recommend it. Use the direct download page.

http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/

Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (PPC) 163MB (13 hours)
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Combo Update (Intel) 310MB (about 23 hours)
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update (Intel) 160MB (13 hours)
Mac OS X 10.4.9 Update (PPC) 72MB (less than 6 hours)

I gave the times for 48Kbps dialup in parentheses. You could always start the download at bedtime. Easily doable if you already have 10.4.8 PPC for the last download I listed.

For those who may not get Leopard, I recommend getting the larger Combo updates. That way if you reinstall Tiger sometime, you can just update it from 10.4 to 10.4.9 in a single install.

10.3.9 has a new Security Patch 2007-003 available today too. 36MB.

Good to see Apple keeping security up for Panther folk.

"I'm gonna be tempted to get a new MacBook to replace the iBook"

I have two now and love 'em. I would do one thing first. I would get to an Apple Store with a list of my favorite websites - especially those with media - and test them all completely.

My only frustration with Intel Macs is that there are a few websites that are broken. I had to go back to the boneyard to get a conference call to play today.
