LAS CRUCES Directors of the International UFO Museum and Research Center in Roswell are beaming in on a new $25 million-plus home one more appropriate for the museum's status as the mecca of UFO enthusiasts.
The museum's board of directors late last year signed off on preliminary designs for a new museum, planned for a downtown site about six blocks from the current location, within the next three years.
The new museum's facade would be a file cabinet drawer overflowing with a found object, perhaps a star chart, said the structure's Boston-based architect, Kevin Schopfer of Ahearn-Schopfer and Associates.
The current museum, housed in an old movie theater downtown, is the central draw for thousands of people curious about the purported crash in July 1947 of a UFO northwest of town.

"If you are in Roswell at the museum, you are there because it's there. It's not on the way to someplace," said nuclear physicist Stanton Friedman, a UFO investigator and co-author of "Crash at Corona: The Definitive Study of the Roswell Incident" who is an honorary member of the museum's board of directors. "If you're going to have a monument to ufology, let's go high-class, huh?"

A new museum would pair nicely with an alien-themed amusement park and resort that city officials are exploring. Roswell officials are seeking more than $200,000 from the state Legislature to hire a consultant to perform a cost-benefit analysis and draft a business plan for a UFO-related amusement park that would be built by private interests, Montgomery said.
New UFO Museum:
Projected cost: $25 million-plus.
Will feature books, videos, computer databases and field reports on UFO sightings and encounters.
Will house a replica of the alien craft that allegedly crashed near Roswell in 1947.
