The recent spate of unseasonably warm temperatures have led to what seems to be an extended breeding cycle for some feral cats -- meaning a bump in the local kitten population and full cages at several local shelters and rescue groups.
So many new kittens have come into the Long Island Humane and Dog Protective Association, a private, no-kill animal shelter in Freeport, that the shelter has had to turn away callers wanting to bring in kittens for adoption.
"We have just been inundated with calls" about kittens, said Maria Cross, one of the shelter's workers. "Usually, by November, December, it ends. It just hasn't this year."
And the calls about kittens have come so fast and furious that Linda Stuurman, director of Last Hope Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation on Long Island wonders if...

Kittens provide sanity for a collective civilization that actually thinks it's advanced.

Thanks for the article. Bookmarked it. Just adding that at my local no-kill rescue shelter in my hometown, the Friday before Christmas last year a family of 4 kittens, one orange long hair and 3 brown kittens with the mother was rescued in my hometown of East Hartford. This news article confirms what has been well known in the rescue no-kill shelters for a while. BTW, those kittens were 3-4 weeks old and now with the mother have been placed in foster home care.

"the warmer weather has contributed to a heavy volume of potential adopters looking for dogs in recent weeks.
Typically about this time, she said, potential adopters hesitate to bring a new dog home because of the difficulties associated with house-training in the middle of winter. "You don't really want to do that in 6 inches of snow," she said."
Well shoot, what they need to do is convince the prospective doggie owners to become kitty owners instead!

In Deimos's case, true: He's 14 pounds of snugglebug. Of course, my eldest cat, Zia, is also a black-and-white, and she's the archetypical demon kitty, so I can't generalize.

Nah, he shares the dining-room table with my other two cats. My bed, OTOH, he pretty much monopolizes.
