Geology Picture of the Week, March 19-25, 2006: Upper Falls of the Yellowstone

This is one of the better pictures of the Upper Falls I could find. The Upper Falls don't get nearly the publicity or the views of the Lower Falls, but they are very dramatic. Because they don't get the publicity, they also don't get as much coverage by professional photographers, so a lot of the images on the Web are digital and don't really capture their beauty. Note the people on the edge-of-the-falls overlook for scale.

KEYWORDS: canyon; lower; river; upper; waterfall; yellowstone
Also, you would not believe how many pictures of the Lower Falls are misidentified as the Upper Falls.

I remember back when I was 8 or 9, my parents took us kids to Yellowstone and we took a hike along the side of that falls.

I also remember passing a woman who wasn't wearing a shirt and thinking how risque it was (back in the 70's). That's probably the reason (aside from how beautiful Yellowstone is) I remembered that particular hike. :)

I just have to say, how can you NOT believe in God, with places this beautiful in the world?

My wife and I love this area of Yellowtone, and have visited it many times over the years. Thanks for the photos.
