Linux thrives in left-leaning Kerala

Kerala, a tiny coastal state in south India, is a site of significant popularity of free software and GNU/Linux. What lessons can Kerala teach other areas about using free and open source software?

Kerala, as a state, is strongly grounded in principles of socialism. Most of the educated middle class is leftist, at least in principle. The state is credited with a near 100% literacy rate and better social statistics than most of the rest of the country. And all this is reflected in a spirit among the people to question any decision imposed on them. They resent lack of choices, and by extension, oppose monopolies. What better fuel for an open source/free software movement to thrive on than a society like this?

Not surprising, since open source is a huge hit in all socialist/communist circles, especially in the governments of China, Cuba, and Vietnam.

So I can use this open source ping list, so long as I don't refer to it as an "OSS ping", correct? I guess you have that trademarked or something.

My concern is governments who pass laws requiring it's use, like China, Cuba, Vietnam, and others. Unfortunately, the DNC is trying the same there here in select areas of the US, thankfully they've so far been stopped, but many aren't even aware that they're trying.

Thanks for the ping ... you can add me to whatever you are referring to your ping list as.

Remember not to call it the "OSS Ping List®", though.

What lessons can Kerala teach other areas about using free and open source software?

Two lessons:

1. Pro-OSS and anti-OSS zealots should really shut up and realize that they need to advocate better software, regardless of whether or not there's a pricetag associated with said quality.

2. The operating system & software market is still rapidly expanding, and further efforts should be made towards computer usability and simplicity. Use OS X for two weeks and you'll discover what that means. (Damn, do I wish Windows had self-contained applications.)

Funny, let me guess they're dirt poor too...

Also funny is that they want "choices" and they want it for "free"... Two mutially exclusive ideas in the long run if those "choices" have any value...

You're welcome. I'll have to be real careful using the source code to the OSS ping list in any other list, though. Since it's probably been released under some tricky license, if I'm not absolutely certain about how it can be intermingled with other ping lists, I might actually be sued and have to turn over all of my other ping lists to "the community".

My concern is the Department of Homland Security mandating Windows, the single most insecure operating system ever developed on planet earth.

They did this INSPITE of the fact that the NSA had developed and released open source changes to Linux (Security Enhanced Linux) that make it virtually impossible to penitrate. These changes have been adopted by the Open Source community whole heartedly.

Byt thanks for validating My original assessment of your post.

Makes sense.  When you think about it, the Consumer PC market is still in it's infancy.  Who knows what is going to happen within the next 10-15 years.  Look at the amazing growth in the last 10.

I was asking as a courtesy, but if being polite is beyond you what else can I expect..

Generally edicts on behalf of the dictators. Thankfully here in the US the Republicans have so far been able to shoot down the DNC attempts at similar requirements.

Microsoft thrives in Communist China...especially since it suppresses words like "freedom," "democracy," and so on. All with Microsoft's blessing, I might add.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it, O Siren of Redmond.

Geez...buy, rent or borrow a clue already.

Yes, that definitely would be a concern, but I don't know of them even planning it, much less attempting it. Do you have any evidence to the contrary? If so, by all means please share it.
