Missouri AG wants answers from Liberty Safe
Bearing Arms ^ | 9/12/23 | Cam Edwards

If the folks at Liberty Safe were hoping that their new policies allowing customers to remove the factory-set access code from the company’s “secure database” would quell the furor over the release of one gun owner’s code to federal law enforcement officials, they got a rude awakening on Tuesday when Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey announced his office is now formally investigating Liberty Safe’s policies and practices.

At issue, according to a press release from Bailey’s office, is whether Liberty Safe “fully discloses” to customers when and why it allows third parties to access a customer’s safe “when either the customer’s consent is not expressly given or the disclosure is not legally required.”

Liberty Safes chose poorly in not doing more to protect their customer's privacy and by turning over the combination to a safe with only minimal push back. I suspect this is going to hurt their sales going forward as I doubt one of their products is going to be on many Christmas lists this year.

The federal government seems to have a big problem with the “unreasonable searches and seizures” thing that is guaranteed by the document they hate the most, after the Bible, the Constitution.

Maybe they should offer conversion kits...turn them into refrigerators.

Liberty's biggest omission in their response was not to disclose to current and past customers what risk this particular release to the FBI poses. If each serial number has its own backdoor code, no problem, taking that particular backdoor out of the database should suffice (assuming the FBI doesn't have the entire database, which is only an assumption). If multiple serial numbers share a backdoor code, then it's going to be an issue.

It's a self-inflicted wound and it might be a fatal one. All management had to do was contact their own legal counsel before spilling their guts, who would have told them that yes, a subpoena would be necessary to get that code. And even that could be contested in court should they decide to do so. Even liberal Democrat donors, which is what their new management appear to be, should have realized what this sort of compromise would do to their public reputation.

If they keep a record of the digital combination the safe was shipped from the factory with, then no big deal.
If they have programmed a “master password” that works regardless if the factory code was changed then huge deal.
With no secret master password it’s up to the buyer to change and create their own code.
If they can bypass a changed code and allow entry into your safe, then they should be bankrupted.

Not good, people should be allowed to sign off when they purchase the safe that there is no backup if they lose their combination. If you want a backup, sign for that as well.

Aside from the issue of giving the code to the FBI, I have a problem with there being a “back door” or universal code to a safe I trusted to keep my firearms safe.

Very short-sighted choice of name for their company.

I have two Liberty safes. One i bought 25 years ago, and one I bought three months ago. The old one has the traditional left-right-left dial, the new one has the digital keypad.

I’m not worried about the old safe being hacked, but the newer one no longer feels “safe” to me. With libtards at the helm of Liberty none of their customers are safe.

If I could return my safe I would, but pretty sure that’s not possible now. Liberty Safes needs to die to preserve liberty.

The irony here is so unbelievable it’s hard to describe. Here you have a safe manufacturer that makes big brawny-looking safes with dead bolts galore that exude invincibility, that are sold at a hefty price, and it turns out to be just false window dressing. Just what are the owners paying big bucks for? Owners put their most valuable items and secrets in this container to keep prying eyes and fingers from gaining access to their property, but low and behold, behind their backs, without disclosure to the owner, the manufacture of this expensive container grants mostly unfettered access to those whom the owner of the safe most wants to deny access. What an incredible scam it is.

Looks like Sean Hannity will need to pimp a different brand of safe.

I wonder if the dehydrators he pimps are actually Fed listening devices in Prepper Households. ;)

Embattled Liberty Safe Haunted by Resurfaced Sean Hannity Promo Touting Dubious Feature

“But the company’s policy has also left egg on the face of Hannity, thanks to an unearthed video in which he celebrated the very same policy of the sponsor that sent waves of customers vowing to get rid of their safes. Twitter commentator Ian Miles Cheong dug up an old video of Hannity praising the company. The video definitely casts the old endorsement in a new light.”
