Why Nothing (Even The Air Force) Can Kill The A-10 Warthog
19FortyFive ^ | 10/6/2021 | Robert Farley

Will no one rid us of this troublesome A-10 ‘Warthog’? The United States Air Force (USAF) has spent almost two-thirds of its existence as an independent service trying to get rid of the A-10, one of its most well-known aircraft. But has the Air Force finally given up? It is odd to think that a fifty-year-old aircraft might have more job security now than at any time in its long history, but it does seem that the Warthog now has a relatively secure space in the USAF fleet.

There is nothing that can do what the Warthog does and nothing even comes close.

Just the sound alone as it approaches scares the **** out of the bad guys. Honestly, they should fly them up and down the Rio Grande and the border. I am sure the coyotes would get scarce real quick.

but it will never happen in this administration.

One of my favorites. I still have a model in my childhood bedroom.

The plane equivalent of chambering a shotgun shell.

The reason the USAF can’t rid of the A-10 is simple: They own the fixed wing close air support role. The Army is not allowed to have its own fixed wing close support aircraft.
So, if the USAF gets rid of the A-10 they have to develop a replacement. This would cut into their budget for really zoomie things. Of they have to turn the role over to the Army which they won’t do.
I can easily imagine a replacement for the A-10. An aircraft capable of deploying large numbers of small guided bombs might be a good replacement. But the ordnance and the aircraft would take money away from the things the USAF really likes - fighters.

Only thing I ever agreed with John Mcain on was his slapping down the US Airforce’s attempt to kill the A-10

A very big shotgun shell, with a whole lot of extra gunpowder shoved in there.

I never got to hear it shoot but I have had it in a security role over me at least twice.

Awesome.

The Army is not allowed to have its own fixed wing close support aircraft.

Exactly why they should transfer the plane to the Army and Marine Corps. Let them get some pilots trained up. And let them come from the ranks of the Infantry.

The AF can say Goodbye to the aircraft. And the Grunts will know that the folks flying them used to be one of them.

Read up on the A 10 desert storm/shield. The milleys tried to get rid of it then but it was so versatile and effective

Many roles.

They could give the A-10's to the Marines...Grunts really don't trust anybody other than
fellow Marines giving them air support. I know that was the feeling when I served.

I hear them practice at Warren Grove in New Jersey. They sound like God’s angry chain saws only louder and coming from the sky. I cant even imagine the horror being on the recieving end.

The USAF doesn’t want the role, but it doesn’t want to give it the Army. Its weird that way.
The isn’t a new thing. The B-17 was originally designed as flying Coast Defense Artillery. The USN immediately moved to limit how far out to sea the USAAC could attack ships. It took Pearl Harbor to end that dispute.

I had a retired career British SAS vet tell me the A-10 was directly responsible for him being alive some 30 years later.

It is possible he loves the thing even more then I do.

You wouldn’t even have to fire on the illegals...just fly that puppy up and down the river a few times...they’ll be heading back south in a flash.
