Discard brick and mortar universities!
1) Free or nearly free education exists **NOW**! The missing ingredient is private systems of certified testing.
Should it cost a quarter of a million to become a doctor or engineer? The more reasonable cost is a tenth of that.
Most of the material needed to be mastered in the STEM fields is**ROTE** and changes little from year to year. It can be learned at home through the Internet and used textbooks.
Yes, some fields require laboratory and clinical rotations. These need a brick and mortar setting....BUT... these experiences can be found or created outside of a university, as well.
2) Encourage employers to use SAT/ACT scores, internships and insurance company input to determine levels of literacy and numeracy to safely and successfully do a job.
Most jobs are learned on the job. If a job didn't need a college degree in 1950, it doesn't need one today.
3) The above can apply to K-12 education, too. The missing key is private systems of certified testing.
This article’s thesis is the reform of the existing system of credentialing ( university degrees.)
A complete abandonment of the university system is possible now. Free or nearly free education exists now with the Internet and used textbooks. The missing key is private testing and credentialing exams.
Thanks for the advice.
Absolutely agree about the cost; college truly is a racket.
You got that right now.
The problem is employers not accepting credentials other than accredited university degrees outside a very few systems (MSCE for Microsoft Server admins, for example).
Re: state government defunding universities
I think it is like a big, fat, festering Marxist pimple. It needs to be squeezed from every side possible.
Re: employers
I agree getting employers to accept private testing credentials is a possible problem. Getting past the H.R. departments is a hurdle that must be overcome.
Maybe it will be like homeschooling. At the beginning of the homeschooling movement, the big worry was would colleges accept homeschoolers without formal high school diplomas. Now, homeschoolers are eagerly recruited.
Re: Rote
Mastering the material in STEM courses requires rote practice. To earn the A’s I needed for admission to one of the most competitive graduate schools in the world ( an Ivy League university) I needed to practice the problems, review the formulas, and memorize the biochemistry metabolic cycles with the same intensity as any top concert pianist practices his or her scales and arpeggios.
It was the same for any top student whether they admitted it or not.
I e spoken to Xers that say theyll not push their kids into universities and big debt. They said trade schools, community college and living at home would be better.
Theyre learning from life.
Cutting funding from schools that discriminate or censor in any way will help some.
Universities have become a huge education employment program, just as politics has become a huge lawyer employment program. Starve them.
Yep!
Universities are a big, fat, festering Marxist pimple that needs to be squeezed from every side possible.
Let’s include K-12 as well! Teaching was the most prominent profession for contributors to Bernie Sander’s campaign.
Yes it does for some.
I’m just a cow college guy so what do I know.
The children are the cultural Marxists future. Have been for many decades.
Our children have been specifically targeted a century by our pubic schools, news, media, churches and now social media. We had John Deweys early 1900s Progressive (Marxist) influence, followed by The Frankfurt Schools mid-1900s social Marxist plan for children.
Then Hollywoods 1950s communist influences, then NEAs No God push in our schools, then the 1960s CPUSA push of college youts for war protests, drug use and wanton fornication, then the 1980s sitcoms ridiculing parents, then the 1990s queer push, then the 2000s self-esteem facade.
A bunch of confused, misdirected young souls around us all...
Six figures with just com college here. Oh, yeah, and years of OJT and self-directed OJL. Not spoon fed.
Congratulations!
What makes you think I advocate spoon feeding?
I dont. I was referring to some Millennials Ive run across...Nobodys shown me how yet.
Not a millennial & again good job!
It applies to all who wish to excel.
I have often posted that schooling is our nation’s MOST serious threat.
We proved that we can overcome a serious attack on our soil. If the Marxist indoctrination schooling continues our freedom will be lost in the voting booth.
You are among the few who understand this.
Practice does make perfect!
interesting, bump!
Ive been wishing for years that Rush or Hannity would focus on it. Levin does once in a while. I bring it up here frequently, yet sadly get few nibbles about it.
We are on the fulcrum right now...
