The percentage of American full-time minimum-wage workers who can afford to rent a one-bedroom apartment in any U.S. state without being what the government calls "burdened" is so vanishingly small less than one percent that it rounds down to zero.
That's the conclusion of the National Low Income Housing Coalition, a lobbying group that pushes for more low-income housing and also reports that no full-time minimum-wage worker can afford a two-bedroom apartment in any U.S. state. Researchers define "afford" by people's ability to pay 30 percent of their income or less on the cost of housing, which may include their mortgage, insurance and taxes. Those who are severely cost-burdened must use 50 percent or more of their income just to cover housing.
The cost of housing has risen so significantly that even a one-bedroom is out of reach everywhere except in 12 counties located in rural Washington, Arizona and Oregon, reports Laura Bliss for CityLab.....

So CNBC doesn’t understand that the minimum wage isn’t meant to support a person? It has always been for people, mostly young, with no work experience. If you are in your 30s and working at a minimum wage job, you are the problem.
You cannot live in maximum comforts until you make maximum money snowflakes. Quit you frickin whining and grow up. Your parents worked for what they had.
Having started at minimum wage and initially tried very hard to be worth even that much, I know how little it is. I had a roommate, sometimes more than one, and I sometimes worked more than one minimum wage job. Thank God!
I learned: to be respectful of my boss and of my boss’s time and money, to be on time, to work hard during work hours, to be helpful to the customers who ultimately pay the bills, and to take initiative when needed and then to check on whether I had made the right decision so I could get it right the next time around. Those lessons helped me to hold increasingly highly-paid jobs and eventually to run my own company. Minimum wage paid very well because the lessons were my entry into the productive world of work.
If you started flipping burgers at 17, and at 27...you haven’t moved up to shift supervisor, and you still flip burgers...there’s something wrong. A McDonalds shift supervisor usually starts at 28,000, and within ten years...you’d easily be making 38,000.
I’d label anyone who is thirty-five years old and has made minimum wage for twenty years...as a loser.
National Low Income Housing Coalition’s report is agenda driven. Just like GoreBaal warming scientists who only have a BA in political science. It’s all about getting some money.
But think of the impressive collection of hairnets and name tags!
THIS JUST IN!
Paper boys (if there were still children diligent enough to maintain a route} can’t afford their own apartment!
Wow. These guys figured that out on their own huh? Bunch a geniuses.
There are cheaper homes available in this town, but they typically would get listed on craigslist or equivalent, not by realtors.

Interest rates are only 4% or so right now. If you can get a parent or sibling to loan you 5k for a down payment, you could borrow 25k (I’m figuring 2k or so for closing costs) and the payment would only be $150 or so/month on a 30 yr.
$8 x 170 hours/month = 1360/month gross pay. Factor in the HEAP program for your electric and gas bills. You could easily afford this 3 bedroom beauty on minimum wage.
I know a dude whom, upon losing his marriage because of a dream of moving here (Texas), ultimately sacrificed everything to move to said state. He is from Brooklyn. The wife took him to the cleaners. He arrived on a bus. He got a job flipping burgers at the age of 40. Then he worked the fryers, then the window, then shift man., then assist. man., now manager in 5 years. Fixing to go District Manager. The place? Whataburger.
One of the happiest people I know. He loves Texas and people. I won’t say his name, but the store is in Garland (the good one, not the one on Centerville).
That is way out in the sticks. The owner would likely need a reliable car to get to work. I snooped around on zillow for apartment rents in my town. There are single bedrooms for around $500 a month. FTE at minimum wage is $17K a year. The town has a great bus system so going without car expenses, is possible. This person would also pay very little if any for Obamacare and possible get some modest SNAP benefits.
WHEN could anyone ever afford an apt. on min. wage?
1. It's less out in the sticks than where I live.
2. If you don't care about stylin' and profilin', you can get a poorly running car for $500 or less.
3. The money you save on rent will pay for the car repairs.
4. You can always find a girlfriend or platonic roommate to share expenses.(it does have 3 bedrooms)
Correct. The minimum wage is a starter wage only for young people,
like the 60 year old Walmart greeter,
or the career waitress over a 30 year period,
or the career janitor.
Again conservatives fail to make the proper case.
The issue is Big Fat Government churns out low wage jobs through taxes. So quit defending poor wages as they are NOT the product of capitalism.
If you now grasp that, please move to the head of the class.
Soon there will be nothing but nice neighborhoods and everything will be hunky-dory....
Ditto. I have to question the accuracy of the CNBC article as it pertains to flyover country. There is some cheap living in real Amish areas south of us if one can get a full time job..
Which means every business that relies on minimum or close to minimum wage workers is being subsidized by the governemnt. Believe me there are a lot of adults making close to the minimum wage who can’t find anything better. That’s why the Chamber of Commerce types love both low wages and the welfare state.
This may be shocking to some but minimum wage jobs were never meant to be a career path
