Man’s pet squirrel attacks burglar breaking into gun safe (VIDEO)

A burglar who broke into a home in Meridian, Idaho, Tuesday, was left with scratches on his hands after the homeowner’s pet squirrel attacked him as he tried to pry open a gun safe.

Homeowner Adam Pearl said he immediately knew something was awry when he returned home that day. His first clue was the footprints in the snow leading through his front yard and around to the back of the house.

When Pearl entered his house, he was instantaneously met by Joey, his pet squirrel. Then, he noticed a few things out of place – doors open where they should be closed, that sort of thing – and when he got to his back bedroom, Pearl realized someone had tampered with his gun safe.

There were marks all around the locking mechanism, so Pearl knew someone tried to open it. Although the suspect was unsuccessful cracking the safe, Pearl said there were a few things missing from his home.

He called the police and as officer Ashley Turner was taking a report, Joey made an appearance.

“During her investigations, Joey had run in the bedroom just screwing around like he always does between her legs and kind of startled her,” Pearl said. “She says, ‘Whoa, what was that?’ And I said, ‘Ahhh, don’t worry about that, that’s just Joey, my pet squirrel.’”

Turner wrapped up her report and left, but returned a few hours later with some of Pearl’s stolen property and an interesting tale.

“She said while she was questioning the individual, he had scratches on his hands, so she asked him, ‘Did you get that from the squirrel?’ and he says, ‘Yeah, damn thing kept attacking me and wouldn’t stop until I left.’”

That's one headline you'll never see again.

I'm just guessing but I'll bet this guy takes the squirrel everywhere with him.

Nice squirrel story. I suspect there is another story about the beard the pet own is sporting. Is that kind of a long scraggly beard common in Idaho? I can almost see him on a Harley while wearing black shades and his studded leather jacket.

I have had a terrible fear of squirrels my entire life ever since my older brother told me that squirrels have pins for teeth. Then, squirrels made a nest in the eaves of our house and got frozen in, so they ate their way into the attic bedroom where my sisters slept. I was so grossed out by the thought of squirrels climbing on me in my sleep. Now, every time I see a squirrel in my path on the sidewalk, I start stamping my feet to make it scamper away. I have no idea why I read this story. Now I am going to have nightmares.

Good for Joey the Squirrel!

My wife brought home a squirrel that had been hit by a car. The back half of the squirrel was paralyzed so she called the “wilderness vet” to ask them what to do. They said she was breaking the law by illegally harboring a wild squirrel. They said she needed to immediately bring the squirrel in to be put down or they would call the police. My wife hung up on them at that point.

We had a wienerdog who became paralyzed after jumping off our John Deere bulldozer; he got better after a couple months. We had the squirrel for 2 months and it got better except for its tail which it no longer could curl over the top of itself. So we let it go and it hung around our house for a couple years after that.

We named the Squirrel Princess Meany Pants. She was never happy about our efforts to help her out. Even with its back half paralyzed it was still much stronger than you would ever expect. She scratched my arms up on a couple of occasions. She had very strong jaws and did her best to bite through the leather gloves that I wore when handling it.

So my whole point is that even though squirrels look cute they are strong, they have sharp claws, and they have powerful jaws. If you had a well trained gang of squirrels they could definitely discourage intruders in your home. Unfortunately, the one we sheltered for a while wasn’t trainable and never became friendly toward us. I assume Joey was rescued by his owner when he was very small.

Now I am going to have nightmares.

I like squirrels. Once in a while I'll toss a few peanuts to one, if I have peanuts. But just to one squirrel. Long time ago, me and my wife were strolling through Golden Gate park. In a heavily wooded area, a woman ahead of us reached into a bag and started tossing peanuts all around where there were a few squirrels. All of a sudden, she was surrounded by 30 to 40 squirrels and they were jumping on her, some messing up her hair, others running all over her body. She started screaming, dropped the bag and ran off down the path. Another time near the seashore where tourists were tossing food to a family of squirrels, we saw a seagull come up to a squirrel to attempt stealing the food. Little squirrel jumped on the seagull and went postal on it, clawing and biting. Seagull jumped away terrified from the squirrels. I keep my distance from the damn things.
