St. Helen's acting up again. Glad to see the prep in action.
No, Washington State isn't going to sink into the ocean.

If a quake in that region causes the Yellowstone caldera to break loose, this entire planet is toast.

The headline should be more like “What are millions of people ignoring?” It isn’t that this is unknown... it’s that it’s actually overdue.

So, just a question: What would the nation’s reaction be if FEMA and these agencies did not practice for a major natural disaster?
I participate in these drills as part of my Ham radio group. Five years ago we had a massive ice storm that cut off the western part of the state. Hospitals could not communicate out of my their area. Because we had drilled every month, getting our rigs up and in action took no time.
If you don’t want them practicing, I guess that’s OK. You and all of those around you will be on your own.

We have never seen such a disaster before in all of U.S. history. True.
The last Cascadia 9.0 was on January 26, 1700.

How is Mt. Hood looking?
Hood is a perfect "cinder cone", though young by current tectonic standards. Oregon's Cascades are beautiful.

Our operating assumption is that everything west of Interstate 5 will be toast. I am looking out my window and I can see I-5 as I write this and am on the west side of it.
We are at 1400' elevation -- would need to be the biggest tsunami in the history of the world to reach us...

As surprising as this will seem, I assume this is just FEMA doing its job. A plan should be in place because someday that earthquake will occur. When? Hopefully, not in our lifetimes but it is good to have contingency plans in place.
Lots of variables which would affect the damage involved but if the earthquake is centered off the Washington-Oregon coast, I sure wouldn't want to be in Astoria. The resulting tsunami would arrive to the coast in minutes and push Astoria up the Columbia River to Portland or beyond.

Methinks San Andreas is the next "Big One", as if "Big Ones" are unusual...

Ever vigilant, never fearful. I’m guessing that is a quote from somewhere - but that is one of my mottos. I’m in the earth sciences in Seattle - and yes, some day the Cascadia will make a huge mess of things. Before the discovery of it (in the 1980’s) Seattle and Portland and Vancouver all shared emergency response backup, and would help each other out.
Since the discovery, their “sister cities” are east of the Cascades, as all three cities may be messed up. Seattle is accessible by one road that doesn’t have a bridge. They plan that the mountain passes will be trashed as well, so helicopter supplies in from staging areas just east of the divide.
I’m working near Mount Rainier at the moment. Was just thinking a few hours ago “I wonder if that hill is tall enough if I hear rumbling?”

What they know is that this is a quick way to redistribute federal funds to local state, county, city and tribal agencies with minimal fuss from congress. They meet together, hold a couple dinners, prepare powerpoint presentations, have the media show up occasionally, and hundreds of millions of dollars are funneled from the feds into local governments.
It is a recipe they use repeatedly in many areas of the country. This time it’s the Pacific Northwest.
