If a quake in that region causes the Yellowstone caldera to break loose, this entire planet is toast.

I thought it might be exaggerated until I watched this, very recent, by National Geographic.
The headline should be more like “What are millions of people ignoring?” It isn’t that this is unknown... it’s that it’s actually overdue.
scary....unimaginable...
So, just a question: What would the nation’s reaction be if FEMA and these agencies did not practice for a major natural disaster?
I participate in these drills as part of my Ham radio group. Five years ago we had a massive ice storm that cut off the western part of the state. Hospitals could not communicate out of my their area. Because we had drilled every month, getting our rigs up and in action took no time.
If you don’t want them practicing, I guess that’s OK. You and all of those around you will be on your own.
How is Mt. Hood looking?
True.
The last Cascadia 9.0 was on January 26, 1700.
I am looking out my window and I can see I-5 as I write this and am on the west side of it.
We are at 1400' elevation -- would need to be the biggest tsunami in the history of the world to reach us...
Lots of variables which would affect the damage involved but if the earthquake is centered off the Washington-Oregon coast, I sure wouldn't want to be in Astoria. The resulting tsunami would arrive to the coast in minutes and push Astoria up the Columbia River to Portland or beyond.
Author sounds a tab paranoid.
What they know is that this is a quick way to redistribute federal funds to local state, county, city and tribal agencies with minimal fuss from congress. They meet together, hold a couple dinners, prepare powerpoint presentations, have the media show up occasionally, and hundreds of millions of dollars are funneled from the feds into local governments.
It is a recipe they use repeatedly in many areas of the country. This time it’s the Pacific Northwest.
Fed’s are practicing martial law in the area they expect the most resistance to fascism.
So are my houses in Acton or the one at the Colorado River going to become beachfront property?? An Ocean View from My home in Acton at 3500MSL would be nice.

We know that at some time the world as we know it will end by some disaster. The New Madrid fault line is not a good place to be either. And that’s where I live Hope nothing happens for at least another several thousand years particularly of this magnitude.
Prayers up to pray for our country and a return of righteousness to the USA. God has blessed us all to be in this country.
It is funny that they are preparing to deal with the effects of a magnitude 9.0 earthquake along the Cascadia Subduction Zone, because that is precisely the size of earthquake that I warned about in an article back in March.
Everyone in the Northwest knows about this possibility so is only normal to try to prepare for it.
It's not clear that the tsunami would affect millions of people. Large parts of the Oregon and Washington coast are not heavily populated. Portland is over 50 miles inland as the crow flies and further inland along the Columbia River. Parts of Seattle and Tacoma are at sea level, but other parts are quite far above the water. Also both these cities are on Puget Sound rather than directly on the Pacific Coast. Parts of Vancouver BC are at low elevation but Vancouver is also behind Vancouver Island.
I wonder why this is suddenly getting so much play. There was an article about it a couple of month’s ago in Reader’s Digest. I had never heard of it. And suddenly, it’s brought to my attention three times in a couple of months. And it’s a huge deal.
