Medical Errors Third Leading Cause of Death in US [semi-satire]

A study published in the prominent medical journal BMJ concluded that errors by doctors and hospitals kill more than 250,000 people a year in the US. Martin Makary, professor of surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, led the research team and said “It boils down to people dying from the care that they receive rather than the disease for which they are seeking care.”

“In recent years a lot has been made of the issue of people living without health insurance and how the government must take heroic efforts to compel everyone to obtain insurance,” Makary observed. “The concern is that those without insurance won’t be able to afford treatment. This study indicates that not being treated isn’t always bad. Sometimes entering the medical world exposes patients to dangers worse than the ailments they had going in.”

“It’s one thing for people to be insured against catastrophic health emergencies like accidents or serious diseases,” he continued. “There the risk/reward profile for being treated is more balanced. But when comprehensive coverage entices a person to make entering the realm of medical treatment their first option they may be increasing their risk falling victim to medical error without sufficient reason.”

“The human body has developed many self-healing abilities over millions of years of evolution,” Makary said. “In many instances relying on that may be a better bet than relying on the much newer and less evolved art of medicine. At the very least, the data don’t support a policy of forcing everyone into a government mandated health protocol like the Affordable Care Act seeks to do.”

In related news, hospitals in the United Kingdom are posting “do not resuscitate” orders—without the patients’ or families’ consent—for tens of thousands of National Health Care patients as a cost-saving measure. NHS spokesman Dr. Malcolm Kildare called the step “a necessary conservation of social resources. A patient of little value to society and his or her family is not the best judge of how our limited resources should be used. Rationalizing the system to ensure resources are available for higher value patients is essential.”

I don't think that's satire. A friend of mine out west told me that hospitals are turning away acutely ill people especially the homeless even though they're more eligible. Obamacare is just like NHS. I said it then I say it now.

He told me of a sick old homeless guy in Seattle, got turned away from Harbor view hospital and given a vial of aspirin. He died of Pneumonia.

Doctors who continue to administer treatment that will not improve the patient’s health should be arrested, tried, and convicted for fraud. An acquaintance has just had her ninth back surgery. Of course, she is in worse shape than she was before she started going in for serial surgeries. Tens of thousands of your tax dollars are financing this medical fraud, paid for by Medicare. No ethical doctor would accept such a patient.

Since signing with a new medical company because of ObamaCare, I was told to take certain medications almost immediately.

There’s just one problem; ALL OF THE MEDICATIONS THEY DEMANDED I TAKE, HAD A SIMILAR WARNING:

Rare, swelling of the face, tongue or throat.

I experienced a swelling of my tongue while using a STATIN. And still, the new doctors almost demanded I take a statin. The next one was because my bones were thinning and that med also had the same warning. Now, the latest is eye drops; both of which have the same warning.

One good thing; I have found a replacement for STATIN drugs. It’s called Citrus Bergamot, and I purchased a two-month supply for $38 at The Vitamin Shoppe. After using this product for 120 days (under my doctor’s supervision), I had reduced my LDL by 86 points, and slightly increased my HDL (which had always been a good number). The product is made from a citrus plant in southern Italy. Now that my LDL has stabilized, I’m also seeing a reduction in my blood glucose number; which is making my doctor very happy. The only downside I can see to this med is you cannot eat a lot of citrus.

Because I don’t care to choke to death, I take the lead and do the research to find products which will work for me; and won’t cause me harm.

I just did a quick check. Medical care is the third greatest cause of death in the US!

That isn't even the tip of the iceberg. Providers aren't going to take blame for killing someone if they can point to another cause. The point of the article is valid....there should be some discussion of the risk/reward ratio of any "cure".

very interesting observations. Thank you. I would add that government will never take responsibility or admit failure if they can point to any other cause or find a scapegoat.
