A Trump observation. [My debate review]
1/15/2016 | Vanity

Posted on 01/14/2016 9:41:46 PM PST by Fhios

That was a masterful take down by Ted Cruz on Donald Trump. From Trump supporters like me, to Cruz supporters like you, we can't deny that it was crisp and clever and knocked Trump back on his heals. The problem is mockery. Not that Trump can't handle some, but it's confusing for him. Therein may lie his Achilles heal.

He's genuinely confused -- thinking I am successful, I have done great things. Why am I being mocked? When in fact his layman's understanding is being mocked and belittled by political theoreticians. Thus they are mocking us.

Trump is real world application. Professional politicians are just political sociological theory, and it's falling apart.

Trump will learn and be stronger for it. It didn't kill him so it will make him stronger. It was Cruz's high point of the debate and Trumps low point. Afterwards Trump just went sailing up, while Cruz dwindled with Rubio back to clever Senate debates.

I could not help but remember many rebuttal statements starting off with some type agreement with Trump. In fact, many interrupted and grabbed time by agreeing with Trump on obvious issues in blue collar terms.

Except for JEB! I heard nothing but 1989 style policy talk. I was waiting for him to break out with the 1000 points of light stuff. What's really bad for JEB! is he seemed to know what questions were coming up and his answered still fell short of what American needs today.

I have thought a Trump wants Cruz to fight back.

To see what he’s got kind of thing.

The blow Trump inflicked on Cruz on the New York values line
was much harder than the blow Cruz inflicked on Trump on
the Birther issue.

Plus the Cruz-Rubio fight was not very good either.
It would have been much better if the two Cubans had
gone at each other in Spanish.

In his emails to the Guardian, Tribe discussed Cruz’s own approach to constitutional issues, noting that under “the kind of judge Cruz says he admires and would appoint to the supreme court - an ‘originalist’ who claims to be bound by the historical meaning of the constitution’s terms at the time of their adoption - Cruz wouldn’t be eligible because the legal principles that prevailed in the 1780s and 90s required that someone be born on US soil to be a ‘natural born citizen.”

He added: “Even having two US parents wouldn’t suffice for a genuine originalist. And having just an American mother, as Cruz did, would clearly have been insufficient at a time that made patrilineal descent decisive.

“On the other hand, to the kind of judge that I admire and Cruz abhors - a ‘living constitutionalist’ who believes that the constitution’s meaning evolves with the needs of the time - Cruz would ironically be eligible because it no longer makes sense to be bound by so narrow and strict a definition.”

Tribe said: “There is no single, settled answer. And our supreme court has never addressed the issue.”

It would help if you mentioned the take down that you refer to that I guess wasn't quite as obvious as you think.

I like Cruz but the biggest takedown or KO was Rubio hitting Cruz late on immigration. That hurt Cruz bad and he had a very weak reply.

What was the birther blow? Did Cruz say that Trump’s mother was not a citizen of the United States?

Ah, Cruz played a Harvard Obama... Trump's mother was a citizen of the US when Trump was born in the US...

Now IF what Cruz pulled is considered ‘conservative’ then I missed that fork in the road... Conservative means personal individual responsibility... Cruz did not answer the question regarding his eligibility, he muddied the water...

The NBC issue was, for the most part, contained like a genie in a bottle. The Genie is out of the bottle tonight. Genies can be a real PIA when they get out of their bottles.

I would think mocking trump is all that new. I am sure Trump is used to it. People have been making fun of The Donald for years. He is a celebrity after all. Vegas glitz in a pink tie.

Hope you have your flame suit on.

I thought it was a reasonable, balanced critique. Not sure why there has to be a Night (and Day) of The Long Knives around here over Cruz and Trump.

Of course, I'm a Trumpswab, and I do have a hard time holding my tongue when it comes to The Usual Suspects, but most of them have pinwheels-for-eyes.

There are a lot of reasonable Cruz posters.

The birther blow was that Trump appeared to get defensive, at the same time Cruz was confident. That's about it. Cruz successfully painted birthers as kooks, using the example of him, born to an American (and hey, servicepeople abroad, their babies are qualified too, just like me); and at the other end, some people think Trump isn't qualified.

The picture the naive and ignorant observer comes away with is that Cruz is NBC, hands down, no questions asked. To think otherwise is to be a kook. It's settled, no need to go to court.

Can you honestly sit there and tell me NYC values are no different than the rest of the country? Cruz did not tell a lie, their values are way, way different. The lame Donnie answer were not values Ted was talking about, such as liberal politics, queers, schools, etc. Those are as different as night and day and are not conservative values.

People from NYC think they are the center of the universe.

I keep hoping for global warming so the ocean level rises and Manhattan becomes good fishing grounds.

What Cruz was saying on Trump’s mother was that “some” are saying to be NBC you must be born in the US to two parents who also were BOTH born citizens in the US. In other words he was saying the argument is ridiculous.

I have to agree with you. Donald Trump did not look very good on the birther issue, but he definitely ‘Trumped’ Cruz on the ‘New York values’ bit. It was clearly a GOPe crowd as Rubio and Bush seemed to get the cheers. I also thought Trump’s handling of Nikki Haley, the irritating GOPe governor of SC, was masterful. He didn’t get into a belittling match towards her in a GOPe crowd he would have been badly booed for but instead took her sleazy comment about ‘angry’ rhetoric as a compliment. Because we should be indignant about how Obama has molested our country.

Like I mentioned Biff.

That line plays well in Iowa.
It did not play well on National TV.
