Would Bernie Sanders gut NASA spending if he became president? Probably
Houston Space Examiner ^ | august 13, 2015 | Mark R. Whittington

With Sen. Bernie Sanders, the independent socialist from Vermont, packing in huge crowds during his early August west coast swing, the idea that he might have a shot at the Democratic nomination has gone from the realm of fantasy to that of distinct possibility. This fact is especially true since the presumptive Democratic nominee, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, continues to slip in the polls and faces numerous ethical and legal woes.

Sanders’ surge means that interest is merited about his views on particular issues. One case in point is his attitude toward the space program and NASA spending. The answer is not very encouraging for those people who value space exploration

If he were to do that, how would the United States “reach out” to muslim nations?

Probably. Space travel is too good an escape from the Socalist paradise he want to create.

Attention, Enterprise. Return to base. Your five-year mission has been cut short. We are reallocating your budget to the SNAP program.

You can have a space program, or you can have a welfare state.

But you can’t have both.

A man named Paul Kersey taught me that.

So would I.

While space travel is certainly worthwhile and exciting, in this era of $18 trillion debt, it is a luxury we cannot afford right now.

He’d gut the GDP. Spending decreases would follow.

I wouldn’t complain. NASA’s in the tank with the climate change true believers, and hasn’t done much of note in a long time.

Forty-five years after the moon landings, we still don’t have single-stage to orbit ability, without which we can’t explore other planets and return safely.

As for Sanders, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

Of course he would. Mondale wanted to do that back in the 80’s before all the Democrats were socialists.

It may be now or never. It is critical for mankind to "get it eggs out of the same basket".

Let’s just keep going into debt with China and finance their moon base etc.

Defund Planned Parenthood, HUD, The Department of Education and about 200 worthless federal programs and we’ll have plenty for NASA.

“According to Brookings, Sanders has expressed general support for science research and NASA. However, he has consistently voted to slash NASA spending as a United States senator. The question as to why was put to Sanders during a recent Reddit Ask Me Anything conference. According to Bustle, the answer was illuminating.

““Another cited all the times that he had voted to cut funding for NASA and asked him if he thought space exploration and research was a worthy goal. (Sanders explained, ‘one is put in a position of having to make very very difficult choices about whether you vote to provide food for hungry kids or health care for people who have none and other programs.’)””

Roughly translated, that means that when the choice is between NASA on the one hand and social programs on the other, Sanders will come down in favor of the latter. Considering that Sanders’ campaign promises include free health care for all, free college education for those who want one, and a $1 trillion infrastructure rebuilding scheme, a Sanders presidency is not likely to be overly generous where space exploration is concerned.”
