'New species' of ancient human found

A new species of ancient human has been unearthed in the Afar region of Ethiopia, scientists report.

Researchers discovered jaw bones and teeth, which date to between 3.3m and 3.5m years old.

It means this new hominin was alive at the same time as several other early human species, suggesting our family tree is more complicated than was thought.

The study is published in the journal Nature.

The new species has been called Australopithecus deyiremeda, which means "close relative" in the language spoken by the Afar people.

The ancient remains are thought to belong to four individuals, who would have had both ape and human-like features..

Living with Lucy

Lead researcher Dr Yohannes Haile-Selassie, curator of physical anthropology at the Cleveland Museum of Natural History in the US, told BBC News: "We had to look at the detailed anatomy and morphology of the teeth and the upper and lower jaws, and we found major differences.

"This new species has very robust jaws. In addition, we see this new species had smaller teeth. The canine is really small - smaller than all known hominins we have documented in the past."(continued)

Depends on how much wasted government job money they spend to find out.

NEW species of early 'human' 3,000,000+ years old? We've known about this for a long, long tome...

They aren’t bones, they are fossils. Fossilized bones, to be sure, but fossils are not bones. Tthey are rocks formed by minerals which slowly take the place of the original organic material.

Strange, the fossil also appeared to have lockjaw, and pronounced eye enlargement just like Nancy, it’s most recent descendant.

“The two scientists who found the lion’s share of walking whale fossils essentially created the best fossil proof of evolution using plaster models and drawings and supplied these to museums and science magazines.

Re: “Lead researcher Dr Yohannes Haile-Selassie”

I instantly worry about the science when I see a “local” name like that.

Is this guy (woman?) actually qualified?

Or, is he an Affirmative Action hire?

And it's not just about race with me.

The Russians discovered an ancient shipwreck off Crimea quite recently. I wince in pain thinking about those drunken fools recovering, preserving, or analyzing rare artifacts. The Russians drilled into a pristine, sub-glacial lake in Antarctica last year and “discovered” new life forms. The Americans and the Brits are doing the same thing on smaller lakes, and they make almost super-human efforts to avoid contamination. The Russians just basically drilled a hole in the ice, pumped out some water, then put it under a microscope.

I get the same feeling when ISIS and the Taliban destroy irreplaceable structures and relics in Syria and Afghanistan.

Noticing the pic of people stooping over the dirt...and the article kind of gives the impression that was the place it was found...but I can’t see how it could be unless there was some unusual way to date it. As I understand it the normal way would be through the igneous rock layers it was found in...but if it was just found in the dirt???

Everyone’s seen how members of some families can bear a strong resemblance to others in their immediate and extended families. A robust jaw with smaller teeth might only be evidence of that since there aren’t any other examples of this allegedly ‘new’ species to compare this group’s to.

So, maybe this is not really a previously undiscovered species of human but an example of family members of the already established species who physically resembled each other, however atypical of examples of the established species.
