There could be an unlikely contributor to the decline of marriage in this country. And it's free pornography on the Internet.
A team of researchers, who published their findings in The Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Germany, determined that the rise of free Internet pornography is not only correlated with a pronounced decline in percentage of young adult males who are married, but might actually be contributing to the trend.
"The results in this paper suggest that such an association exists, and that it is potentially quite large," the study notes.
The researchers used data from the General Social Survey (GSS), a comprehensive, nationally representative survey, to analyze how 18-to-35 year-old men used the Internet between 2000 and 2004. They focused on how many hours each participant spent on the Internet per week, and how many reported having used the Internet to view pornography in the past 30 days, but also observed other activities, including the use of religious websites.
"We asked ourselves, what is helping determine whether people are married or not?" said Dr. Michael Malcolm, a professor at the University of West Chester, Pennsylvania, and one of the study's authors. "One of those things, we thought, could be the use of pornography."

The reason, Malcolm explains, is likely tied to the relationship between marriage and sexual gratification. If pornography is viewed as a means of alternative sexual gratification, then it could be undercutting the need for marriages to serve this function, at the very least during a younger age. Think of it as a milder form of premarital sex.

Between 2009 and 2010, erotic content accounted for roughly 13 percent of all Internet searches, according to Forbes. In addition, a 2008 study found that nearly 90 percent of men think it's acceptable. It might be time to dive a bit deeper into how the societal shift is influencing things happening beyond all the closed doors.
People aren’t getting married these days because of financial reason

At best, I would consider porn’s role a fringe contributor. The main problem is the destruction of family and marriage as they have been traditionally defined.
People arent getting married these days because of financial reason
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
True. And the article addresses that. As well as other reasons why marriage is floundering.
Did ya ever think the reason people aren’t getting married is because of the way they have been brought up?
Like a family going to church every Sunday, reading the Bible, talking around the Dinner Table every night about what each of us are doing and did that day?
Like going to relatives homes for vacations, and learning about the different parts of the country?
Oh yes, I forgot, people are way to busy now days to do any of that, they have sports, and jobs and have to run here to do this or run there to do that....sorry I guess my life was just boring to you folks....
We are 100 years away from synthetic AI-robots who will be able to fulfill all functions of a ‘partner’. This question of marriages today....will be discussed at a much higher level when you have a gal who prefers the company of her AI-companion “Daniel” who looks remarkably like Clark Gable, with a blended sense of humor between Don Rickles and Eddie Murphy. Why stop her when she wants the marriage license for such a partner?
Porn has always existed as countless museum artifacts demonstrate.
Militant feminism and its constant companions the entitlement mentality and The Tyranny Of Cliches (after Jonah Goldberg) has put men off because men, quite reasonably, do not respond well to being called predators, evil, rapists, etc. by complete strangers.
The greatest mystery of feminism is why heterosexual women in search of a mate and a family would be taken in by a leftist philosophy created out of whole cloth by old maids and lesbians. It’s akin to burning lumber on a bonfire before attempting to build a house with it.
Yes, all those guys at the SEC studying porn for 6-8 hours a day, you didn’t know they were actually conducting a study.
At best, I would consider porn’s role a fringe contributor. The main problem is the destruction of family and marriage as they have been traditionally defined.
Very true. It began with no-fault divorce and now we see how same sex marriages are also damaging to our society. And lets not forget the governments role is destroying marriage as they replace it with the Welfare State.
Lots of reasons why marriage is in trouble. But porn is a very valid contributor.
Porn could be having a negative effect on marital relationships, but it’s not keeping people from getting married.
No one seems to be able to say the truth out loud.
Traditional marriage is being deliberately and systematically crushed by those that despise everything that made America successful. It’s that simple.
That's certainly a huge factor.
Another one is that American women marinate in feminism so long that most of them are unattractive candidates. (Look at how, for example, men are generally portrayed on television; then compare/contrast that with a man's need/desire for respect from his wife.)
Aside from those, there's the substantial risk of divorce which, thanks to no-fault divorce, can be initiated on a whim.
Modern socialist feminism wanted to Smash the Patriarchy and Smash Monogamy. This is the result, no male in the house.
it is definitely part of the problem though
“The main problem is the destruction of family and marriage as they have been traditionally defined.”
Absolutely the real reason.
Marriage is legally very risky for a successful male.
The entire legal system is set against them.
As the father of a teen son, I have learned that it is shockingly available and much more graphic than it was in my day.
I'm of the generation when a Playboy magazine was big news among the neighborhood boys. Photos of bare breasts!
Nowadays, it's high-def video that leaves no detail to the imagination, and it's available through computers, phones, video game devices, etc.
Something is lost when the mystery is removed.
