Detroit Free Press Columnist Rochelle Riley laments Oh, if only the children of Detroit were pieces of art in a column in which she claims no leaders want to talk about education in Detroit. The column implies that as the city goes through bankruptcy, the school system is not getting the proper amount of attention.
For the Record says: The state of Michigan is devoting about $440 more per-pupil in state funds to Detroit Public Schools in 2013-14 compared to five years ago. In 2013-14, the state poured $378.5 million into DPS, or about $7,802 per student. In 2008-09, that figure was $7,445 per student. DPS enrollment has plummeted from 95,494 students in 2009 to 48,511 students in 2014.
Overall, Detroit Public Schools received $13,825 per student in 2012-13 which includes local, state and federal funding, the most recent year released by the Michigan Department of Education. Meanwhile, Wyandotte Public Schools, just 17 miles away, received $8,242 per student, or $5,583 less per student than Detroit Public Schools.
If DPS is being neglected, its not via the checkbook.

Government schools are child abuse.
I’ve never understood why Detroit and other cities have become such basket cases, in education and any other measure.
Reason being, these places have been governed by Democrats for decades. There is no organized political opposition to the Democrat party.
Many of these places are governed by members of minority groups.
In Detroit, for example, most of the population is black, and most public officials are black. So that means that racism is not a factor in their declines.
So why is Detroit in such trouble? Detroit has been run by the Democrat party for decades. And black Detroiters can take comfort in knowing that racism is not a problem because so many public officials over the past decades have been black as well.
So, if Democrat policies are so superior to Republican ones, and minorities can eliminate racism and discrimination by electing their own to public office, then why exactly have Detroit and other cities slid into an abyss???
What do liberals say about all of this?
You could spend 1 MILLION per student and if they have the IQ of a doorknob it wont make any difference.
I know it's not PC to point this out, but the reality is not everyone has the same IQ. And it's a scientific FACT that some groups have MUCH lower IQ’s than others.
Thus if you live in a area where a group with low IQ’s moves in ... of COURSE the test scores of the students at the local school are going to go down!
To assume otherwise is to assume that everyone is equally intelligent, and that's just a fairy tail.
The question answers itself
“What do liberals say about all of this?”
That you are a racist for pointing this out.
Most of that money goes to school employees pensions and other lavish benefits.
liberals only care about “science” when it supports their positions.
The purpose of “public education” is to launder tax money for Socialist DemoRat political campaigns, and to make Socialist union thug bosses multimillionaires.
Is the Detroit school system under the city government? Around here the school districts are independent of the city governments with boundaries that often don't match the city boundaries because the school districts go back to the original township borders. If the are independent, the Detroit's bankruptcy and attempt to hold onto assets has nothing to do with the schools.
Pouring money into detroit schools will not solve the problem. The problem is the students have a limited capacity to learn, and their parents are the source of the problem.
It’s not IQ. It’s will.
Anyone with a room-temperature IQ can learn if they want to.
Anyone with an oven-temperature IQ won’t learn if they don’t want to.
I know what you’re getting at, and as a former professor assure you (with rare exceptions) those who wanted to learn did, and those who didn’t failed - and IQ wasn’t an issue.
More money just means more money for educationists at all levels. And their unions. Less money for taxpayers, more money for the destroyers of our society and culture.
It also does not help if the IQs of the teachers are not appreciably higher than the students.
That would cover all my 4 kid's education (homeschool in style, plus tutoring) and college. And Disney World every other year.
But schools are graded by how well their students perform on standardized tests in comparison to others of the same age.
Even if you are teaching at a special ed school where all the students are highly motivated, want to learn, have caring involved parents and each student is taught one on one by the best teachers in the world...
They STILL wont perform as good on a standardized test as others their age (because they have a 50 IQ) Thus causing the school to get a poor rating.
You can't ignore the IQ of those entering the school in other words.
Unions and corruption and waste. Time to trot out the infamous photo of the tree growing in a Detroir school system book depository - strewn with rotting books.

This ping list is for the other articles of interest to homeschoolers about education and public school. This can occasionally be a fairly high volume list. Articles pinged to the Another Reason to Homeschool List will be given the keyword of ARTH. (If I remember. If I forget, please feel free to add it yourself)
The main Homeschool Ping List handles the homeschool-specific articles. I hold both the Homeschool Ping List and the Another Reason to Homeschool Ping list. Please freepmail me to let me know if you would like to be added to or removed from either list, or both.
This is true and I tutored kids and proved it. They weren't in the running for top ranking in grades and weren't taking over the chess & math clubs.
They studied, worked at understanding the topics and graduated without having to repeat grades or classes.
