The way cultures arrange their calendars is pretty interesting.
The Byzantines numbered their years from 5508 BC, what they thought was the date of the creation of the world. So for example our 1000 AD would be their year 6508.
And in 6508, they were the greatest power in Europe. But they let it slip away, and in 1071 suffered a crushing defeat to the Turks at Manzikert, and lost most of Anatolia.
