We recently posted Julie Borowski’s video entitled, “Get the Government Off My Donuts.” Sure, it sounds silly and stupid in light of stories about the turmoil in Syria or the persecution in North Korea. Donuts…seriously? Who cares? How shallow is that!
Well, despite Julie’s silly donut scarfing demonstration and the light-hearted title, the point of her video wasn’t actually about getting the government away from her donuts. It was about freedom. Nothing shallow about freedom.
The FDA taking steps to ban transfats in food doesn’t seem important in light of what’s happening in places like Syria, but the root of Syria’s issues can be traced to a nation’s lack of freedom. America’s uniqueness is due to the freedom we’ve known since our founding. But, the more and more “trivial” things we give our government control over, the more we relinquish our freedom.
The opposite of freedom is bondage.
You might find my title choice callous in light of all the victims in Syria who have lost their lives. I am not downplaying the tragedy in that, at all. My point is, when a nation loses its freedom, that leads to war and turmoil and yes, in extreme cases – persecution.
FDA bans (OF COURSE) pale in comparison to violence, but my point is, that if we freely give away all our freedoms, we can’t expect our country to remain this safe-feeling haven that we grew up taking for granted.
Julie said it best in her video – “If you’re not free to make dumb decisions, you’re not free at all.”
Removing transfats would definitely help people eat healthy, but what a lot of health-conscious people don’t think about is the fact that allowing the government to take control of our food is giving them more control.
I don’t blame our President for this. I don’t blame the government. I don’t blame Democrats. I blame our friends. I blame people my age who don’t study history or know what’s happening. I blame people in our college dorms who would rather score food stamps than earn their dinner. Obama isn’t what’s wrong with the country. We are.
I don’t say that to sound all high and mighty. I was an ignorant college student more recently than I’d like to admit. I didn’t have a clue and I didn’t care. That’s why we need to inform our friends. We are just as much to blame as they are.
We don’t live in a communist country with a leader who is snatching away our liberties. Sadly, we are freely giving them away. Obama isn’t forcing these things on us (well, he is trying sometimes). We are trading liberty for security and free stuff. We are accepting handouts and embracing entitlement, unaware that the consequence of this could mean that America as we know it disappears and we’ll left in bondage to The Man – whoever he may be.
This issue is so much bigger than donuts. Freedom is not something to take for granted. Freedom must be fought for. Not just on the battlefield either. We fight for our freedom by remembering where we came from and by denying the dangling carrot of free stuff.
Work for what you have. Be someone of integrity. Pay attention to the decisions our leaders are making. Be involved. And, get your friends involved.

video is great and she’s right of course. But when a people gives up their right to choose their own healthcare to the government, you don’t get to call the shots anymore.
I see here Mr. John Q, that your are overweight and have been for awhile, so we will have to put you toward the back of the waiting line for your angioplasty.
Since you are an older retired American, you will have to wait longer so our limited resources can be diverted to younger tax pa....I mean, people.
