Posted on 09/17/2013 8:23:21 PM PDT by TexGrill
If Greg Abbott is the Republican nominee for governor next year, GOP challenger Tom Pauken says Democrat Wendy Davis could win. Pauken, the former chairman of the state Republican Party, is a long-shot candidate against Abbott. He says Abbott might look unassailable at the moment, but hes beatable especially if Davis decides to run for governor on the other side. At a recent tea party event in Bedford, Pauken told the crowd: If its Wendy Davis vs. Greg Abbott, then she has a 40 percent chance of winning.
Paukens uphill fight underscores a larger tension within the GOP, pitting the partys social conservative and tea party wings against the Republican establishment. Hes traveling the state meeting with Republican audiences. And as we reported today, one thing hes finding is that conservative audiences are wary about the prospects of Davis, whose 11-hour filibuster against an abortion bill catapulted her to fame in the Democratic Party. Democrats havent elected a governor in Texas since 1990 and experts say the Fort Worth state senator would have little chance of winning the Governors Mansion. And the fact that shes so closely associated with abortion rights probably would help much in a general election in Texas. But Pauken cautions that Davis has certain strengths that Abbott would find hard to counter.

Texas is only Republican for one more gubernatorial election cycle. They already have one Dem Senator.
Imma go out on a limb and predict she can’t pull 40% of the vote
Yeah, like here 4 GOP running for Supervisor. One said if the conservative woman won the primary she would lose to the liberal.
Well, the conservative woman won, and she beat the liberal!!
Wendy Davis as governor of Texas? Somebody please kill me now, anyone!
Wendy Davis as governor would be a nightmare for the Lone Star state.
Why do you guys troll with that nonsense?
If you want to say something can't you refine your words to a more precise accurate statement rather than just throwing out that ridiculous statement in it's various forms?
Nightmare does not cover it at all. I don’t even live in Texas and the thought of her having a legit chance of being governor would make me literally unable to sleep, eat or breathe properly.
I’d put my money on that. This woman is to babies was Omar Al Bashir is to... babies.
I don’t think so.
Here you are again, sitting in China and pushing your boy, Pauken, who was a terrible State Party Chairman and he is over the hill. He will throw up any name to try to diss Abbott.
You are such a POS, take the advice of Ronald Reagan who once said, “Aww, shut up.”
Greg Abbott will be the next governor of Texas and is one fine conservative, guns and all.
Yes, Abbott received and endorsement from Chris Christie, so that makes him unbeatable ... Sarc.
>> They already have one Dem Senator.
You’re an ignorant fool.
What state YOU from, boy?
I used to read your stuff... but you’re dead to me now, bitch.
Stay in China, douchebag. It suits you. Texas is not your home, no matter what your nick might be.
Screw yourself, crapstain.
They already have one Dem Senator.”
While Cornyn may seem like a Democrat on occasion, he actually has an (R) after his name. Other Senator is Cruz - no doubt about him being a Conservative Republican. So unless I missed something while I slept, do believe you must have us confused with some other state.
Cornyn may have an R after his name, but he is by far the Democrat’s best asset in the Senate, and the worst Senator of all 100, which says a lot. The Republicans would have a majority in the Senate if he hadn’t deliberately tried to tank Senate races. His kind of Republicans are Specter, Chaffee, and Crist. He was head of the NRSC and he worked behind the scenes to make Republicans lose. The fact that Texas allows him to represent him is a terrible black mark on the state. He is infinitely worse than McCain.
Why don't you post that endorsement for all to see? Is that another lie?
Christie does not live in this state so an endorsement from him means nothing - post that endorsement to prove Christie did something right for a change.
John Cornyn is an evil man. The only reason the Republicans didn’t win a majority in the Senate is because he deliberately sabotaged several races. (He tried on several other) Can you deny any of that? Texas would be better off having an actual Democrat in the Senate, because they wouldn’t be able to run the Senate efforts as a Democrat fifth column in the GOP.
It’s already trending that way, but the second Congress passes the immigration bill, Republicans will have little or no advantage among voters. They are probably already figuring ways to maximize the vote.
Why doesn’t Pauken get blackballed by the party for this? He is obviously working for the Democrats.
Why don't you post that evidence? If you are going to say that, you should back it up with proof.
>> John Cornyn is an evil man.
He’s lame, and ineffectual, and deserves a primary. But evil? no.
>> The only reason the Republicans didnt win a majority in the Senate is because he deliberately sabotaged several races. (He tried on several other) Can you deny any of that?
It’s *YOUR* claim. Can you *prove* any of that?
>> Texas would be better off having an actual Democrat in the Senate, because they wouldnt be able to run the Senate efforts as a Democrat fifth column in the GOP.
Horse shit. I’ll say it again: where are YOU from, boy?
Perhaps the Deomcrats need a Pro-Life Conservative Catholic candidate who supports the 2nd Amendment, opposes excessive regulations from the EPA, favors lower taxes and less business regulations, while fighting the spread of illegal immigration in Texas. However, Pauken contines to stay in the Republican Party to fight RINOs. By the way, his campaign Website shows his strong support for conservative values:
Who are your Senators?
If the lady candidates can’t take the heat, maybe they should go back to the kitchen.
Wow, you Abbot folks sure are a classy bunch. Let me know when you get out of your caves.
This article makes him sounds like the ultimate RINO. He’s saying that if they nominate a conservative, Wendy Davis will win, so they need to nominate an ultra moderate candidate? If he thinks Republicans are so terrible, why doesn’t he become a Democrat?
I don’t think the Democrats would support a candidate who has Pauken’s conservative credentials. Are there any Dinos?
Are you seriously telling me you didn't read any articles on Free Republic in 2010. For example, there were article all over the place that Specter and Crist were his top two candidates. If you can't bother to read, I can't make up for this.
You defend him all you want, but it's a fool's errand.
Of all the contortions you are going to defend him, explain this:
2010 was a wave election. As lousy as the GOP is, they won overwhelmingly in the election. But mysteriously, the flopped in the Senate where Mr. Champion of Specter and Crist is. It's almost impossible to buck a wave election, even if your are incompetent. How do you explain that? Two elections cycles in a row he monumentally botched the Republican senate campaign.
Texas is more Republican than it has ever been, presidentially Obama got 41% recently (44% in 2008), that is a margin that isn't going to be made up in 4 years, but within the state government, the republicans have a great amount of recent gains.
Re Cornyn - You are preaching to the choir. I only hope there is someone who decides to run against him that we can all get behind. It is going to take somebody who is able to amass a huge war chest and lots of boots on the ground, someone like an 8 foot tall version of Cruz. Cornyn has built his own empire in D.C. and he will not go down easily.
There were enough candidates in 2012 so that the vote could be split and force Dewhurst into a runoff. Don’t see that happening in 2014. Neither I nor most of the people I know will ever vote for Cornyn again under any circumstances.
Will Tom Pauken endorse Wendy Davis if he loses the primary? Because he is running a loser strategy if all he does is attack Abbott and say things like this headline.
Do you know anything about the primaries? Candidates fight to be nominated for their Party. That means they attack their candidates, who are either fellow Republicans or Democrats. Once the candidate wins the nomination from his Party, he can then attack the cnadidate from the oppossing Party. Just keeping you updated on basic rules of democracy in the USA.
The way to win conservative votes is to attack leftists.
This headline almost makes it sound he endorses Wendy Davis over Abbott, if that is the case he should probably be in a different primary.
I do not know a lot about Tom Pauken but if all I know about him is attacks on Greg Abbott, then it makes me think maybe he is a McCain type who bashes those in his own party and not those in the other party.
Tom Pauken, show us how conservative you are instead of just attacking Abbott. That is the real way to win the primary without salting the ground you are trying to win.
>> Of all the contortions you are going to defend him
What contortions am I going to? I said he’s lame and ineffectual and needs a primary.
But he is NOT “evil”.
Words have meaning. You chose yours poorly and I’m calling you out on it.
Do you even live in the US? Why are you so belligerent about my senator but you don’t even have the balls to say where YOU live? Answer me that.
