"I've been preaching this since long before Gary Taubes' books came out. That's because I have a colleague who studies the physiology of insulin. From what I know, Taubes is right. A quote re Dietary Incorrectness at Powerline:...Taubes disputes the connection between dietary fat and high cholesterol. He challenges the thesis that dietary fat is detrimental to our health. He rejects a balanced diet. He advocates a high-fat diet. He opposes dieting. He doesnt object to exercise, but he asserts that it makes you hungry. Its almost funny. He is the dietary equivalent of politically incorrect.

Carbs in banana
In descending order there are:
35 carbs in one extra large banana (over 9" long)
31 carbs in one large banana (8" to 9" long)
27 carbs in one medium banana (7" to 8" long)
23 carbs in one small banana (6" long)
19 carbs in one extra small banana (less than 6" long)
6½ carbs in each ounce or 28g of banana
51 carbs in one cup of mashed bananas
34 carbohydrates in one cup of sliced bananas
Glycemic Index for Bananas
The glycemic index (GI) of bananas varies depending upon how ripe the bananas are. This is because a lot of the carbohydrate in green bananas is in the form of a kind of resistant starch which we lack the enzyme to digest. As the fruit ripens, the starch is converted into readily available sugars. One study of "under-ripe" bananas came up with a glycemic index of 30. One of "slightly under-ripe bananas" that were "yellow with green sections" produced a GI of 42, while another of "over-ripe" bananas was 52. However, most studies of bananas haven't specified the ripeness, and have come up with GIs ranging from 46 to 70. An average of 52 is usually assigned to bananas.

I’m lovin this thread!! Thanks!
Don’t forget to check your nutritional supplements. Some of them use wheat as a component.
Except for bacon. Bacon is awful. You don’t want bacon.
Heh. I got flamed big-time by a fellow FReeper a couple months back who thoroughly approves of the government regulations forcing restaurants to post the calorie content of their menu items. I explained to him that calorie-counting is obsolete and the regs are an unnecessary cost burden to businesses.
He was just furious with me. Calls himself a conservative but this was one nanny-state regulation he liked.
Bacon is fine. Turkey bacon is better, but both are acceptable.
Fat is not bad for you - Simple Carbs are the culprit.
Research “Glycemic Index”
Foods with a high index will cause insulin spikes which cause weight gain, plus the highs and lows in energy.
A low-carb, high-fat and high-fiber diet of veggies will boost your energy levels, keep them constant and you will look, feel, think and sleep better.
I went from 250 lbs. to 180 lbs. in 8 Months and have stayed under 200 lbs. for the past 10 years on a modified version of Atkins.
Another helpful hint: Get a George Foreman Grill as it makes it easy to cook Bacon, Salmon, Chicken, etc...
Stir-Fry is good too. Chicken and veggies cook up quick and easy.
Tuna/Egg Salad is another favorite.
I weight myself weekly, and if I start to approach 200 lbs. (I’m 6’2”) I cut back on carbs.
After the “Induction” period of under 20g of carbs per day, I keep my carb intake to under 75g per day.
Good carbs - not pasta, bread or other simple carbs that are converted to sugar and then to fat.
Buy the Atkins book or one of the similar books and learn the basics, then follow them and watch the weight fly off and the energy go up.
I agree 100% with your entire post, but I’d like to add that in addition to looking, feeling, thinking, and sleeping better, your overall health, including blood pressure, blood sugar, and lipid profile will improve.
People with diabetes & high blood pressure do themselves a world of good if they switch to a low carb lifestyle.
I too have had a lot of success with carb dieting. It works if you stay disciplined. I have to laugh at people who tell me Atkins is “dangerous” because of brain-washing from the boob tube.
Basically for me the two enemies are enriched white flour (doughnuts, cookies, cakes, pastries) and milk, which packs the pounds on like nothing else.
I eat a lot of chicken wings, salads, wraps, and snack on rolled up Wunderbar bologna and Special K Cracker Chips, Sea salt flavor.
Lost 15 lbs since Oct...
When I make stir fry I substitute shredded cooked cabbage for rice. Yummy.
I am 66 yrs. old and sick and tired of dealing with people’s disapproval of other people’s weight. - I’ve dieted a lot of my life; but mostly didn’t pick up weight until after 40. Even then, I wasn’t grossly obese; except in the eyes of the “who’s who and what’s what” PC dieters’ opinions - and they tend to think if you’re not skinny as a stick of spaghetti you’re too fat.
I’m hungry, and I’m gonna eat. I have to cook. Don’t feel like being hungry and not eating like a human being. - The BRAIN is composed of fat. We need fat; lest we get alzheimers. - Today this is good, that is bad. Tomorrow it’ll be something else. Besides, Michelle has done got on my one good nerve about food.
Enjoy your eating and don’t let the ba****** get you down.

“...avoiding wheat, barley (malt), and rye in this society is a 24/7 concern.”
OK, real question here, no blarney. All of the grains listed above are used in the distilling of my favorite adult beverages.
Is there a carb-related danger in liquors produced from grain? Yes, I know about the `empty calories’ in alcohol.
I’ve not tried the cabbage sub for rice...thanks for the suggestion. Sounds very yummy and healthy!
Of course you might end up with some new problems, but that's a totally different sort of thing.
Stay away from beer ~ even rice beer is flavored with barley malt. Many things are flavored with barley ~ I'm particularly susceptible to malt so I really watch out with so-called chocolate candies.
Brown rice pasta and quinoa are it, unless it's corn or a corn byproduct.
My favorite substitute for all that stuff is made of whole white corn in the form of a tortilla, unless it's a cornbread I've made myself. With a light sprinking of a few crushed red pepper seeds that tortilla tastes like bread. i can use those tortillas to make pieshells as well.
Best ones are made with lard, but most of them on sale these days are made with oils and not lard.
I'm a big milk drinker. I've been trying to drink more water last few months and I've lost some pounds. I wonder if cutting out a lot of the milk drinking is a large part of it. I absolutely craved milk while pregnant with my first born. I drank a gallon a day, but I really packed on the pounds during that pregnancy.
Calories dictate weight gain or loss. Exercise produces stronger muscle which increases metabolic burn rate.
If you do not have a particular problem which prevents you from burning calories (thyroid) you can eat anything you want and maintain your weight as long as you do not over eat calories.
I have one of those "weird" metabolisms. I don't gain weight. And I love bacon. Seems like every time I go to the store, the price has gone up, so I'm trying to suppress demand.
Were you a member of the Bagrat Topagua Fan Club? ;)
I swear by Pure Protein bars, they have 20 g of Protein and only 2 g of sugars...although my only concern is that they contain sugar alcohols....and I can’t get a clear answer as to whether they are harmful or not.
