Libertarian presidential candidate Ron Paul ranting, raving and screaming for drug legalization 24 years ago on "The Morton Downey Jr. Show". With special guest appearance by Charles Rangel, as The Voice of Reason. Lunacy on parade (on all sides in this freak show of a debate).

I think Dr. Paul is making perfect sense in this video. He is a staunch defender of liberty. I like the way Ron Paul gets fired up for individual rights.

Cheers to Freedom!

Yeah, the rest of the people on the show seem to feel like stepping over individual rights for the “common good” is completely justified, necessary and should be mandatory.

I can’t watch the video (at work), but I believe the excerpt. And I do know Paul - along with his pal Barney Fag - wants to legalize dope.

So, how does that make perfect sense to you?

Morton Downey Jr said some pretty wild things in that show. Wow. Thanks for posting that. I had forgotten about that show. Sure looks like an endorsement for Paul.

I liked what Paul had to say in the show about government having limits on how Americans should be able to live their lives without the government telling them what to do but taking a well reasoned position that our individual rights end at the tip of another person's nose.

I'd say that is what is behind Paul's reasoning in his opposition to abortion. Not covered in the show but also a very conservative principal of Paul is his stance on foregin policy that the U.S. should not be in every foreign entanglement around the world. We can't afford it and it drags the U.S. into battles that are not ours, both the reasons the George Washington offered up when he first stated that foreign policy position and advice to the nation.

I like the way he subjects himself to that idiotic forum, screams like a lunatic, shouts Soviet talking points about “George Bush in the C.I.A. dealing drugs”, confuses the Hell’s Angels with Guardian Angels, calls someone in the audience fat and generally carries on the a 14 year old kid on a playground. Very dignified. Everything I’m looking for in a POTUS.

The depths to which this country has fallen can be measured in direct proportion to the amount of support this Manchurian freak show has accumulated over the years. He’s a circus act and an establishment wingman, and his worshippers are utter fools.

Also, identical language about Bush dealing drugs in the CIA is used in those newsletters that he never wrote, saw or signed off on. What a coincidence!

his opposition to abortion

...is window dressing. You'd think the continuing mass murder of innocent kids by the millions would be a front and center issue for a liberty-minded man like the good Dr. Paul. Not so much. It never comes up on the stump, or in the debates. The extent of his pro-life advocacy was one pro-life ad before the Iowa caucuses.

He's as pro-life as Mitt Romney is. Which helps to explain why Dr. Wingman won't lay a finger on the establishment's chosen one.

I think Paul is wearing that same suit today?
Morton saying, “you can take away his cigerettes and he will give them up by putting it out in his [Paul’s] eye” was a little over the top.
Otherwise, to much drama for me.

So, how does that make perfect sense to you?

Individual freedom cannot exist without personal responsibility. As a conservative I believe everyone should make their own choices and be responsible for the consequences. You can eat Twinkies all day and weigh 300 pounds for all I care, as long as I don't have to pay for your food or healthcare. Drink yourself silly but pay for your own liver transplant. This is what being a conservative means to me; each person being free to live their life any way they choose as long as they are responsible for the consequences of their behavior. I live in California and could probably score some cocaine by lunch time if I wanted to do so; I just don't like cocaine and what it does to people and communities. If it becomes legal tomorrow I still won't want any. The WOD is just another excuse to rob us of our individual rights. I am not going to vote for Dr. Paul in the primary because I don't think he is electable and if he were elected I doubt he would be a very effective POTUS. That said, I am grateful that Dr. Paul is in the race because he represents individual liberty.

I’m not a Paultard and won’t vote for him. However, that’s not what Paul was trying to do. He wanted to decriminalize at the federal level, leaving state laws in place. That would mean dope would be illegal in all 50 states.

I personally think that move makes more sense than the current system, as long as transportation across state lines would still be illegal.

I agree with Zevon 100%. It is up to the INDIVIDUAL, not the STATE, as to what the individual does. I consider myself pro-life but I don’t want the government to FORCE my views into what everyone has to do. I’m not a Paulbot but I do think that it’s good we have at least one canidate who is speaking out about the importance of liberty.

I also would not vote for Dr. Paul in the primary because of his “ostrich in the head” stance on Iran and his “he’s a hero” stance on Bradley Manning. That being said, I’ll vote for ANYONE but Obama in 2012. (please, please, please don’t let it be romney...)

Dr. Paul is in the race because he represents individual liberty.

He represents nothing. He's a Democrat heckler on a Republican stage. He's there to attack anyone who challenges Mitt Romney. In case you haven't noticed, that's been his sole function in this campaign.

Mitt Romney was the first man in American history to mandate a purchase as a condition of living in a state. We're now halfway through January, and Mr. Constitution hasn't called him on it once. Yet he's attacked every other candidate relentlessly the moment they posed a real threat to Mittens' coronation.

I wonder if they promised him a job or just paid him off in gold bullion.

I loved when he would walk up to guests at those podiums and blow smoke in their faces. Good stuff.

I’ve known several former Paultards who swore up and down that the newsletters weren’t in a voice or style Paul would use, then saw this video and completely changed their tune.

This is the Paul some of us have been warning people about.

Wait until you get to the second part of the video when he starts screaming about CIA conspiracies and almost takes a swing at Curtis Sliwa’s wife.

Individual liberty for the personally irresponsible. Ron Paul is the candidate for dopers and other rejects from society who want their anarchistic values to overide the good of society. And they will misuse the Constitution as they seek to do battle with SoCons.

You are right - Individual freedom cannot exist without personal responsibility. And when you instutute libertarian values you will guarantee the loss of personal responsibilities every time.
