JunkYardBlog has coined a fascinating new word to add to our lexicon. Perhaps with enough use and exposure, it might even be made an entry in the new OED.
"Verrücktenfreude" Theres a word in German, schadenfreude, which refers to the malicious pleasure we sometimes take in the misfortunes of others. Schade is like Too bad, or thats a shame, and freude means joy.
I think we need a new word. Verrückt is German for crazy, nutty, or psycho. (Actually theres supposed to be an umlaut over the u, but I cant make that show up through Movable Type [fixed Duty Officer]). We sometimes take a little malicious pleasure in the insane excesses of our ideological opponentstheir batty conclusions, their relentless hatred of America, their bizarre rhetoric, their self-righteous preening. When Deb Frisch, for example, goes off on a weirdo tangent hoping someone JonBenets a bloggers two-year old son
well, as awful and frightening as that is, its fascinating. We cant look away. We try not to stare, but theres a little part of us that says, wow, thats some awesome crazy goin on there.
Ok. I screwed up on pasting the title.
It should be:
