FULL TITLE: Walmart security guard shoots 'shoplifting' mother dead in parking lot as she tries to escape with two young children

A 27-year-old mother of two has been fatally shot by an off-duty sheriff's deputy after he suspected her of shoplifting at a Houston Walmart.

Harris County Sheriff's deputies have said that victim Shelly Frey, Tisa Andrews and Yolanda Craig were stealing when they were confronted by Louis Campbell a 26-year veteran of the force who works as a security guard at the store.

According to Campbell the women ran to their car and when he rushed to open the door, they accelerated away - at which point he fired the deadly shot into the car which hit Frey in the neck.

Security at the store on the 14000 block of the North Freeway had noticed the three women 'stuffing items inside their purses' and notified Campbell, who was working an extra job that evening.

Investigators with Harris County said the three women even attempted to pay for some small items to act as a cover for the shoplifted ones.

In his first post, anyone is entitled to their opinion.

After that...old Japanese saying “to save face keep lower 1/2 shut”

There have been many stories on FR about cops going rabid and shooting people and dogs. Plus the Occutards did not help with police image. I am beginning to think after all that there are some who honestly can’t tell that the officer acted in protocol.

You need to learn to read. I said I’m not sure how crowded it was. Oh, never mind. I understandnow. You’re just trying to start an argument. Not interested.

There are many cop haters. I don't know if they have problems with all authority figures or just those who are paid to enforce the law.

Did you not post this in #74? "And how dangerous is it to shoot in a crowded parking lot while being dragged by a car."

“You need to learn to read. I said I’m not sure how crowded it was”

Every time I have been to Wal Mart, no matter if it is 12 am or 12pm it is always crowded. Always a lot of cars in the parking lot and ALWAYS a long line at the check out. This is just normal times all through the years. Now you figure this happened at Christmas season and it is much worse. Most Wal Marts these days are super stores which means people can do their grocery shopping as well as other items. I have to believe this accounts for the crowds at their stores.

If the parking lot was indeed crowded when this incident occurred, the driver of the getaway vehicle apparently didn't GAS.

It is obvious the criminals are wrong, but the largest criminal is the government enterprise.

You,re right about that.

You sound like a bleeding heart liberal, crying for the criminal.

And you will do and say anything to defend the actions of a public sector union member. What does that make you?

Last couple of things ~ (1) The officer hasn't been reported as being injured, or even killed ~ as yet.

(2) Which means his fear of being killed was not well founded in fact, else he'd probably been killed since the driver got away!

(3) He shot a passenger ~ not the driver, so if he was trying to stop the car, it's a real good question what he was up to. I favor the earlier hypothesis that he had his pistol out long before he got to the vicinity of the vehicle. Which makes this most likely an accidental killing ~ on his part ~ but a capital crime if the car bumped him ~ and that'd be on the part of the driver ~ and the other passengers!

“Read the story. The car was in REVERSE. That would wedge the officer/wallmart employee with a gun between the door and the dash. Come on over, lets try it out. I’ll only go backwards at 10 MPH. Lets see if you can get out.”

There are two stories. One from the UK and the other from a Huston TV station. Here’s what the U.S. version said:

“”Campbell chased Frey around the parking lot. She got in a car with the other suspects and two children. Campbell opened the door and commanded them to stop, but the car was placed in drive and moved forward, investigators said.

“I think it knocked him off balance and, in fear of his life and being ran over, he discharged his weapon at that point,” said Thomas Gilliland, Harris County Sheriff’s Office.””

I guess the video will tell us which account is correct...

Wait a minute, I thought she was the driver.

Even if she was not, he missed the driver and hit her it must mean they were going at a high rate of speed and the driver dodged a bullet LITERALLY.

I watched the video. I did not know one of them had hit the policeman with her purse as he tried to stop her.

When a policeman says “stop” you stop. Unless you are Amish in America and you don’t feel the rules and laws apply to you.

This video said the children in the car were hers, other news sites say they were the other women’s. Either way it does not matter. The kids got a good hard lesson in why they should not grow up to be a thief.

(1) The officer hasn't been reported as being injured, or even killed ~ as yet.

IYO, is that a prerequisite for attempting to protect oneself?

Which means his fear of being killed was not well founded in fact,

Have you ever had a firearm pointed at you or discharged in your direction? Dragged on the pavement by a moving vehicle driven by criminals attempting to escape the law?

He shot a passenger ~ not the driver

Perfectly understandable under the circumstances posted.

I favor the earlier hypothesis

Whose hypothesis?

Not necessarily. Any movement of the vehicle could effect bullet impact.

Keep reading ~ keep reading ~ and then go back to the FIRST THREAD on this one story and there it is ~ I didn't propose it. Somebody else did.

BTW, have I what? You are entirely too personal, but let's put it this way ~ I was hit by a speeding freight train once and survived ~ that was after sliding down an icy hill into the path.

A bullet? Am I supposed to be afraid of a mere bullet?

How utterly absurd!

There's this list of five airplanes on which I had tickets, but I missed the flight and the planes went down killing everybody. A lesson ~ if you and I are supposed to take the same flight and you don't see me, GET OFF THE PLANE!

A note on argument ~ in particular on this issue of having a well founded fear of being killed. First, the logic of the situation. You can end up alive or dead at the conclusion of the event that raises this issue.

If you are still alive, your fear was not well founded ~ didn't mean you didn't think you might be killed, but your were safer than you thought ~ and usually you'll only have a few seconds to think this through.

If, on the other hand, you end up dead, your fear was, in fact, well founded even if no one else thought it was at the time.

The problems we've encountered quite regularly in handling this 'well founded fear of being killed' come in several clusters. They are, basically:

1. When a civilian shoots someone.

2. When a cop shoots someone.

3. When an unarmed person manages to fight back.

4. When a cop accidentally fires his drawn weapon.

5. When someone, cop or civilian, thinks he's in danger of losing his own life and shoots someone not even involved.

We usually never think of looking at the outcome ~ which is all I've done in the above analysis. I think we need to keep in mind that sometimes you think you're going to die but then you don't. Then, sometimes you're just walking along minding your business and Jarred shows up!

Did you even bother to read the story?

Obviously not, I am of the Lazmataz school of posing before reading!
