Meet the Little Chinese Car Threatening a ‘Bloodbath’ for U.S. Auto Industry

'Any car company that’s not paying attention to them as a competitor is going to be lost when they hit their market. BYD’s entry into the U.S. market isn’t an if. It's a when....'

The car, launched last year by Chinese automaker BYD, sells for around $12,000 in China, but drives well and is put together with craftsmanship that rivals U.S.-made electric vehicles that cost three times as much. A shorter-range version costs under $10,000.

I posted here back in January that BYD and other Chinese automakers are going to kill the US auto industry.

I had been in Iceland and Norway thru all ofJanuary and had been in a bunch of BYD taxis and rideshares.

They are of seemingly good quality and the drivers all liked them.

They are cheap to produce and have modern styling.

Things are really going to get bad in the next couple years if they are allowed to be sold here with minimal tariffs.

(Of course like most Chinese products, they will probably fail prematurely but by the time people realize it, the damage will be done and the big 3 (two) will be effectively ruined.)

Made in China.

Driven onto a RORO car carrier in Guangzhou.

Sailed across the Pacific Ocean.

Driven off the RORO in Long Beach.

That “Sailed across the Pacific” part should cause some concern. We’ve already seen two ROROs ruined (one sank, one severely damaged) by electric car fires onboard at sea.

That’s not a pickup. It’s a “Tray”. They’re quite popular in Australia, more so than pickups. I like the idea.

It could be named, “ATB” or around the block. It would be used at golf clubs, or at small gated communities. It’s not much more than a golf cart with a roof.

But, EVs, no matter what the size, are yesterday’s new wonder vehicles. The ‘gotta get one’ days are gone, and most never got one, and never will. BYD is really ‘IYD’ or in your dreams’. Hyperbole such as that in the article above, is not going to sell anyone on the crap.

In that respect, how is it any different from a Smart-Car, a VW Beetle, or a Mini-Cooper?

BYD, which appears to stand for “Behold Your Death”, could be a nightmare to drive on high-speed American highways.

Drive it into an empty field, put a brick on the accelertator, close the door, and get away from it, before it explodes and catches fire.

On one hand, I want absolutely nothing to do with Chinese cars or EV’s. On the other hand, the article raised some interesting points.

American auto manufacturers are always stuck in the past. They mentioned hose thickness because they’ve always done it that way.

In the 70’s, the Big 3 lost business to Japan, Datsun, Honda, Toyota etc. They were forced to get better, which they did for many years. Unfortunately, they haven’t kept up.

Did you notice that the car is a sedan/hatchback? How many sedans and hatchback does Ford and GM make? I think the answer will be zero by next year.

As far as buying a new car, I would ever even consider it. But, if someone, an American company preferably would make a simple, basic ICE car without all the luxuries, at a really fair market price, I’d really consider it. Sure, I like power windows and a great sound system. I can care less about multiple or even any air bags and a hotshot emissions system. Strip it down to the basics and let the market decide.
