Gold pocket watch recovered from the body of the richest man on the Titanic
Daily Mail ^ | April 27, 2024 | Peter Henn and Richard Percival

The pocket watch of the richest man on the Titanic – recovered when his body was fished out of the Atlantic seven days after the tragedy – was sold a record-breaking £1.175 million yesterday.

The timepiece belonged to John Jacob Astor IV, a US business magnate who was among more than 1,500 people who died when the ship struck an iceberg in the early hours of April 15, 1912.

His 14-carat gold Waltham watch was sold at Henry Aldridge & Son auction house in Wiltshire for a record-breaking £1.175 million, six times the guide price, matching the record paid for a Titanic artifact – the violin played by bandmaster Wallace Hartley.

“BP News gives more details: “Being a widower he may have been allowed to join her but instead forsook his own rescue, choosing to provide the masses with one more chance to know Christ. Harper ran person to person, passionately telling others about Christ. As the water began to submerge the “unsinkable” ship, Harper was heard shouting, “women, children, and the unsaved into the lifeboats.” Rebuffed by a certain man at the offer of salvation Harper gave him his own life vest, saying, “you need this more than I do.” Up until the last moment on the ship Harper pleaded with people to give their lives to Jesus.

“The ship disappeared beneath the deep frigid waters leaving hundreds floundering in its wake with no realistic chance for rescue. Harper struggled through hyperthermia to swim to as many people as he could, still sharing the Gospel. Harper eventually would lose his battle with hypothermia but not before giving many people one last glorious Gospel witness”

No Astor relations here. Great grandfather socialized with them in the NYC 400, and 5th great grandfather did surveying work for the original Astor. We only connect with the Newport cousins through my 3rd great grandfather. (And, no, none of the fortune came down our line. Just the history, but it’s still great fun.)

He must have been wearing a life jacket if they found his body. I’m sure he could have bought his way onto a life boat. He must have been a stand up guy. There are very few of them left, especially in the billionaire class.

They will have to build thousands more hospital beds at the V.A. to house all the female combat vets with PTSD if they ever actually put them in combat units. This will break the back of what is left of our country, but I assume that is the plan all the time. Pliven and the other idiot.

He was risking lung cancer by doing that

I hope he realized that was shortening his lifespan!

I can’t truly imagine anyone from this generation giving up their seat for any reason.

I’m a Jr ROTC instructor at a Texas High School. I’ve seen a lot of young men step up. I have hope, if only with this corner of the world.

Women demand equal rights. Well….lets see who wins the seat on a sinking ship. I can’t blame men. Women-demanded this.

Ugh, that was a horrible movie.

Young woman with rich fiancé goes on a cruise with her betrothed. While underway, she meets a homeless drifter and decides to throw away her future by having a wild fling with him. (Because doesn’t every woman harbor secret fantasies about homeless drifters?) That fling was apparently so wild that she spent the rest of her life reminiscing about it.

The movie could have been made so poignant if the story had revolved around the young woman who lost her betrothed in a terrible tragedy. But, no. It was about a fling, a two or three night stand.

Spare me.

Understood. Thanks. That’s an unfortunate quality of Daily Mail which, because of its many photos, is one of my favorite sites. The writers are occasionally nasty on Trump, but the majority of readers are more conservative. I’ve seen some of their articles already marked as AI written. What I’ve usually found is that the answer to their headline is about 3 paragraphs in. Following that, they repeat the articles that have already been written on the topic, many of which are still emphasized. But photos - it’s worth it.
