The New Yorker is running a contest. What should we call our era? Some possible candidates: Terrible Twenties, the Age of Emergency, Cold War II, the Omnishambles, the Great Burning, and the Assholocene.
Try as I might, I cannot understand the last one. Regardless, it’s absolutely the case that there has been a dramatic turning of events and our lives. It’s not just national. It’s global and devastating.
I’m going with the Terrible Twenties.
Everyone seems to agree that this moniker applies, regardless of class or political leanings. You can take your pick of the symptoms: ill-health, inflation, political division, censorship, overweening state power, shabby political candidates, war, crime, homelessness, financial strain, dependency, learning loss, suicides, excess deaths, shortened lifespans, lack of trust, demographic upheaval, the purge of dissent, the threat of authoritarianism, mass incompetence, spread of crazy ideologies, lack of civility, fake science, corruption at all levels, middle class disappearance, and on and on ad infinitum.

The nineteen twenties were ‘The Roaring Twenties’.
Now, 100 years later, we are in ‘The Whimpering Twenties’................
Too early. Need to see what 2024 brings and maybe 2028.
All our miseries are signs of a failed ruling class that has turned into a predator of the people they rule. The people need to throw off these reptiles like a coat on fire. We are ruled by incompetent reptiles who actively hate those they rule. Why do they hate us? Simple, our leaders are failures and their failure has forced them to prey upon those they rule to survive. It’s a commonly known psychological phenomenon that abusers have to learn to hate those they abuse in order to not suffer the consequences of guilt. They have to hate us because without that hate there is no justification for what they do.
These despots will not change their behavior while they remain in power. They must be removed.
No need to be negative.
DJT can fix it in 2024, for 4 years, and we’ll call it MAGA, and maybe DeSantis will be in, after that.

This decade is only approaching the 4-year mark, and it's already considered "reputation"-worthy.
It started with 2020, so I'd have to go with it being the decade of hindsight -- of revelation and clear understanding -- paradoxically in real time, because why wait.
A fitting acronym as well: "D'oh!"

Come to think of it, re tens (decades) and twenties (this decade in particular)... there's a lot of commentary in the Jewish spheres concerning the commandment for the giving of the half shekel (aka the Temple Tax).
As in, why is the value of a half shekel defined in terms of whole shekels? Not as 10 gerahs, but indirectly, as half of 20 [gerahs].
The general interpretations go with the concept that each individual is only part of a whole of the soul(s) of Israel.

Expect the unexpected and you'll be good to go.The traditional answer to these questions all revolve around seeking and telling the truth. That is surely not asking too much and yet it is the last thing we are getting today. What prevents us from hearing it? Too many are too invested in the lie to allow it to get a fair hearing.
