While cyclist Edwin Gonzalez Montoya of Chicago was participating in the Hincapie Gran Fondo in Greenville, South Carolina he saw something odd fly overhead. In reviewing the GoPro footage, he saw that the unidentified flying object was actually an athletic deer leaping over his bicycle mid-ride.

I never saw a Flying Deer, I never hope to see one; But I can tell you, anyhow, I'd rather see than be one.

Or something like that?

I’ve seen plenty of them in Tennessee, even jump over the cab of a truck, although it’s hind hooves did scrape the paint. Then bounded off in the undergrowth.

Had a close call on a motorcycle one time... after that, your eyes don’t stop scanning from side to side.

I’ve seen deer bound BETWEEN the strands of barbed wire on a barbed wire fence. Amazing. Left tufts of hair behind.

Many reports of deer jumping over moving vehicles. They’re not all so good, as many examples of deer jumping into moving vehicles to predictable results.

An elk did this about 25 or 30 feet in front of me while walking on a fire road in the mountains in Colorado. Came hauling out of the trees and jumped completely over the road that was sunk down about 6 feet or so on both sides. The road was as wide as the one those bicyclists were on.
Very impressive. That thing was BIG.

Elk.
Northern Arizona.
Took up half the road.
Plenty of stopping room.

I wish the one that didn’t clear my hood hadn’t tried, but so thankful for God’s mercy that I wasn’t travellig half a mile faster.

I witnessed this 50 years ago. My buddy and I were motorcycling home after closing bars, so speed only 35-40 mph. Deer jumped off hill, one step in road, leaped over my buddy, knocking him off motorcycle. He crashed, laughing ass off. Scratched only pride.

back in the 80s I was riding my bicycle down a steep hill, and there were a bunch of deer on the right side of the road eating grass or whatever deer do.

I was going about 28mph -30mph was drag limited.

I saw the deer the deer herd saw me and started running down the hill and then crossed in front of me to get into the left side wetlaneds.

I was full on brakes and came within one inch of flipping over one of them.

Sweaty dear smell really nasty.

Driving just outside of town in rural Illinois ten years ago on a rainy day. Four-lane road with a center turn lane. A deer came charging out of some woods. I thought it was going to slam into the side of the car in front of me. Instead, it leapt over the car, landed in the center lane, and went sprawling spread-eagle on the slippery pavement. It then continued spinning on its belly across the opposing two lanes. Once it spun onto the shoulder, it got up and ran across an open field.

My wife was on a charity bike ride toward the end of the day and tired. All of a sudden everything blacked out. She managed to bring her bike to a halt without falling off but was very disoriented. the rider behind her told her a large deer had jumped across the road at my wife’s eye level about one foot in front of her.

When driving at night in suburban Baltimore, I usually modify my route to avoid large meadows. I’ve had deer walk right in front of my car. Good thing I was driving slowly.

Had one try to jump my van on the back road of Fort Lewis, WA, and didn’t make it. It ended up partially coming in my open driver’s side window hit me, snapped my exterior mirror, bent my window molding so I had to bend it back to get the window up, did a 180 from the window and hit the left side of my van behind me and collapsed on the road. I stopped, got my bearings, called security and before they got out there, the thing limped back into the woods. I suspect the bear out there will get it. Jarred my eyeballs and cost me a pretty penny to fix.

North Austin, TX back in the 1980’s. Road was 3 lanes each direction, morning rush hour, 60 mph and a full size pickup truck in the center lane was in front of Me about 200’. Bambi comes out of the neighborhood on the left and runs across those 3 lanes and the median and our fast lane, leaps over hood of the truck and I’m watching it and am waiting for it to clear the truck hood and continue on to the woods on the right. But Bambi doesn’t reappear ! Next thing I see is the cab rear glass shattering and Bambi coming out of the cab and into the bed of the truck. By this time I am passing the truck in the right lane and don’t see anyone driving the truck but it’s still going straight ahead.

Everybody behind us was stopping so I just kept going. Don’t know if the driver was injured or what.

I’ve heard stories of deer jumping in front of a rifle bullet and sacrificing itself but never loading itself in the back of the truck and offering to go home to the freezer.
