How a Wave of Electric Trucks Could Create Millions of ‘Accidental Environmentalists’
WSJ ^ | 24 April 2021 | Christopher Mims

These aren’t your California cousin’s EVs. In fact, a growing number of economists, sociologists and psychologists say they could turn even guys who grew up on ’60s muscle cars into something they might not have identified as before: environmentalists.

The 1,000-horsepower beast he preordered from General Motors is the new electric Hummer. It will be the third Hummer Mr. Dykes, whose family-owned company operates in 14 states, has owned and, at $112,595, the most expensive. He says what sold him were the ads. GM bought a spot featuring basketball superstar LeBron James in this year’s Super Bowl.

Magali Delmas, a professor of management at the University of California, Los Angeles, says most people buy things based on five criteria: quality, cost, health benefits, status enhancement and emotional connection. She uses a related term: “convenient environmentalists,” for people who will make the green choice only if it doesn’t require sacrifice.

What happens when there is a hurricane or other bad weather or emergency and thousands of people are on the road stuck in traffic how are you going to generate those batteries

—”the EV folks have been promising since 1890.”

AND THAT IS A FACT!

That said, battery tech advances are slow and incremental, but the circa 1890 start is a huge factor and they are coming along nicely, of late.

It is PROMISED to have EVs on price parity in about four years.
The actual four years in question have not been noted.

— the power steering was electric”

My wife Prius V has it and they have used for 20 plus years.
I love the car, the second-best car I ever owned, Suburban was #1.
We will reassess at around 150K miles, so far looking good.

At least with an EV pickup you can carry a generator in the back ;’}

“It appears to me that replies to this thread are missing the point that impressive numbers are beginning to come from electric solutions.”

The main reason I think EVs will be a big part of our future is that they are so much simpler to make. Far fewer moving parts, far fewer fluids and gases to deal with. Once mass production is up and running EVs will be the cheaper option to build and maintain.

That says about 61 million tons of lithium reserves are now known.

Don't forget, that has to be shared with all the bipolars, and other Dems/Libs of the world; not all of can be used for batteries.

We don't want them all off their meds!;-)

It’s the male end plugged into the coal, sucking electrons out. Smart grunts would know that.

Peak vs average only shows the distribution can handle the load off-peak.

My point is that few generate the power off-peak. A large percentage of power comes from “renewables” and “green” sources...solar...which won’t be there after hours to charge all those vehicles.

The best EVs have a battery capacity of 100 kWh when new. One gallon of gasoline has 33.7 kWh. So you have a vehicle that has the equivalent of a three gallon gas tank that takes 10 hours to fill. This leaves out where the electricity comes from and where do the batteries come from and the fact that the USA transportation sector uses about 11 time as much energy as the total output of all the nuclear plants in the USA. Wind energy is bulls...

So coal is about all that’s left it takes about a pound of coal to generate one kWh so 100 lb of coal to charge one EV once. Burning 100 lb of coal produces 367 lb of carbon dioxide. Not that CO2 is bad it’s just I that I want to point out the hypocrisy of the greenies. Burning 3 gal of gas produces 71 lb of CO2.

EVs are a total scam and a way to reduce the mobility of the peasants.

“In combined cycle power plants (CCPP) a gas turbine generator generates electricity while the waste heat from the gas turbine is used to produce steam to generate additional electricity via a steam turbine. Siemens has a wide portfolio of cost competitive, high performance, operationally flexible and easily constructible steam turbines to meet the diverse needs of customers. The exhaust heat of the gas turbine is utilized to generate steam by passing it through a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), so it can be used to drive the steam turbine. This combination of two power generation cycles enhances the efficiency of the plant. Combined cycle power plants equipped with the latest Siemens technology achieve unprecedented efficiency levels of more than 60 percent.”

https://www.siemens-energy.com/global/en/offerings/power-generation/steam-turbines/steam-turbines-in-combined-cycle-power-plants.html

An internal combustion engine (ICE) is about 10% efficient.

The modern generation of electric power is about six times more energy efficient than the car’s ICE.

The loss of electrical energy via transmission, the battery and the electric motor might be around 20%, so 6*(1-.2) makes electric cars about 4.8 times more energy efficient than ICE cars.

Not in Virginia. Our governor — yes, that moron— just signed legislation requiring all electricity used in the state to be generated from renewable sources by 2050. The last coal fired power plant in Virginia is scheduled to close in 2024.

Thanks for posting the First Responders Guide from Tesla’s web site. When the radio news reported that Tesla offered no helpful information, I thought it very odd . Of course Tesla has instructions on dealing with fires and I’m glad they do too. Perhaps I heard wrong or it was just sloppy journalism.

A better question would be; How is the electric grid going to handle this new demand?

public transit, the far more energy-efficient option

That's a whopper. Cost is proportional to total energy consumption. Government transit is so energy inefficient the fares typically only cover 10% of the costs. If they tried to charge the full costs, nobody would ride these virus vector mobile insane asylums.
