—”Smart grunts would know that.”

NB: I, like many of my brethren, make no claims about mental acuity. I’m guessing that “Smart grunt” is an oxymoron and totally against type.
There is a huge body of knowledge,’ stuff Grunts know’. Most of which cannot be discussed on a public forum and never on Sunday.

That brings us to inductive coupling and the property of a lump of coal.

Is coal AC or DC. A young sober grunt would detect this property in a glance. I’m a septuagenarian and long out of practice. And yes, DC is a no-go, switching it on and off quickly (manually?) might work?

What is the proximity? close is better; square of the distance?
Skin effect?

—”It’s the male end plugged into the coal”
Clearly, it is a female shown next to the coal, notice the skirt, meant to keep fingers away from hot elements. (top in photo)
Gender??? This does not look good.
If the prong is hot, as any Grunt can tell, you are likely headed for trouble.

Given the points above they’re still better than electric at this point.

EVs might be better one day but they're not there yet.

Re: Total cost of ownership, the link you posted includes this gem:

“While new EVs offer significant cost savings over comparable ICE vehicles, the relative cost savings of an EV purchased when it is 5 to 7 years old can be two or three times as large.“

In 5 to 7 years the battery will be markedly inferior than it’s original efficiency and will most likely be ready for a replacement in the very near future. Currently replacement Tesla batteries cost over $15K, and are “estimated” to cost $5K eight years from now.

This is coming from someone with an EV on order. I will be using it for my short daily commute, which is the hardest on ICE vehicles. The tax law will make my ownership sensible even more than the vehicle’s comparable costs in that role.

“ Where are the electric tractors and combines needed to plant and harvest food crops?”

Not exactly the same thing; but....

For heavy equipment there are already models that use a diesel engine to provide electricity that powers the equipment. It’s a bit more money upfront but lower operating costs and greater torque/power. As long as the government idiots don’t insist on “recharging” electric vehicles these things can make sense.

Using electric power rather than pneumatics is a plus.

—”How is the electric grid going to handle this new demand?”

See#23
And I would add that while EV sales are up, they are coming from ZERO, therefore can not go down?

The largest market, city dwellers will be a tough nut to crack.
With secure parking, OK.
Street parking, never happen!
The copper charging cable would be gone before you made it to inside your house/apartment.

—” Cost is proportional to total energy consumption. Government transit is so energy inefficient the fares typically only cover 10% of the costs. “

A very interesting supposition.

We have many suburban busses and most that I see on the street are empty.

Some may claim highspeed rail is taking it to the absurd, but the numbers are very real and from outer space.

Have you seen anything published on this view?

“So you have a vehicle that has the equivalent of a three gallon gas tank that takes 10 hours to fill. ... EVs are a total scam and a way to reduce the mobility of the peasants.”

Perfect post. Why are people so concerned about wanting an electric vehicle? The propaganda makes them want it. The math certainly can’t.

“They can recycle lithium batteries I believe.”

Yes, but not economically. The government FORCES those that sell such batteries to accept them for recycling.

When my wife retired, she selected a Prius V (wagon) for her retirement car; Many, many short trips to visit the grandkids a twenty-minute ride.
The deeper I get into the Prius the more I like it.

So far the only downside, My friends added a “ZERO to 60-— EVENTUALLY” bumper sticker. I kind of like it but, when shown the 0-60 of the Prius is exactly the same or better as the older diesel pick-ups they love... they attempted to trap me in rolling coal!!!

I know firefighters. They say electric cars simply burn. Rescue the occupant and let the stupid thing burn.

For the FR driving club members that use a Texas catheter for their nonstop coast-to-coast runs each week, they can drive what they want.

A 110 volt wall receptacle will easily charge most daily needs overnight.

My Ford Mach e will go 0 to 60 in about 4 seconds, so no bumper sticker like that for me!

DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) has Busses (Terrible) and Light Rail (not bad).

The media has said in the pat, about 7% of their Operating budget and none of their expansion budget comes from fares collected.

Obviously, they hide the accounting and make the actual numbers hard to find, but In 2020, Expenses were $0.44 Billion/year. Revenue from fares in 2017 was $53M/ year and 2020 was “down 30% and not expected to recover for “at least 3 years”. So the 7% estimate the media has used for years, seems pretty close.

The other 93% of the money comes from the Feds, taxes and long term debt (they are paying salaries with loans they’ll have to pay back, with what, who knows)

According to Georgia power most of their generation comes from coal. I live in GA so that’s what I go by. OTO if you live in NY then oddly enough you get a lot of your energy from Ontario Hydro which in spite of its name gets 60% of its power from nuclear and only 20% from hydro

Explain to me how generating useful energy from waste heat from gas turbines doesn’t violate the second law of thermodynamics if you can. By definition waste heat is not usable energy. If they’re recovering enough waste heat to run a steam turbine then they’re not extracting as much energy as they could on the gas turbine side.

Triple a says modern gas engines are only 30 to 35% efficient. What location did you pull that 10% from?

And where do you think that additional 11x the total output of all the US nuclear power plants is going to come from? I don’t think the electricity fairy has that much available. The electricity fairy is related to the lithium fairy in that they magically make resources available that electric car cheerleaders never explain.

In addition I live about 650 miles from Palm Beach. So let’s both go to Mar a Lago on the 4th to cheer president Trump. I’ll take my Chrysler minivan that get 23 mpg with the air conditioning full on. And you take an electric car. It takes me 10 to 11 hours to complete the trip including gas stops. How long would it take you to cover the same distance in an EV?

lithium batteries don’t need oxygen to burn. They had and oxidant and a reductant in close proximity to each other. all they need is a breakdown of the barriers that keep the two separated and watch the pretty flames.

you can do the same sort of thing by placing calcium hypochlorite pool shock in an old tin can and adding brake fluid (dot 3) oxidant and reductant get together like a house on fire.
