I used to visit this forum years ago and I recently felt impressed that I should come back and share some info.
I am a software engineer by trade. I write code. I've worked for many big tech companies over the years. Last year I worked for a well known big tech company on a year long contract. I worked on the software that searches all social media platforms and collects the data on you.
Facebook, Twitter, et all, have back doors called APIs that allow authorized entities to request data. And that data is then packed up and sent to the requestor. This is done using the Elastic Search technology. And I don't mean a little data, I mean all of it, terabytes worth.
If you post a message about your dream vacation to Detroit, it's scanned. If words in your post match the criteria they are looking for, all your info is packed and passed to the requestor. It gets worse. The technology is now available to scan photos and pick out images that match as well. If you post a picture that has some where in the image, let's say a logo on your shirt, the software can find it. I haven't been on Facebook in a year and I deleted my account. I asked my boss if he was "ok" with what we were doing. He said to me, "Look, I just keep my head down, it's a job."
This is not hear-say. I was a SDET or Software Developer in Test. It was my job to write automation code that tested the search algorithm. In other words, if 50k people "Liked" a video or an image, that we would get back all that data as expected.
Part of that testing was posting images FB, Twitter, etc, that contained an item. Then making sure the code found that item, the image was flagged and the data on it was returned to me as expected. So if you have a picture that contains a Christian cross some where in the image and they want to put you on a list, they can find it that quick. Or anything else they want to find.
Stay off social media platforms. I deleted all my accounts, you should too.

Brother, if you find one, please let me know!
What was your former FR handle?

Nothing on the Web really goes away. It is true with Social Media too.
What pisses me off is that other than items shipped direct from Amazon, freight companies (DHL, UPS and FedEx) are charging a remote area surcharge. $10 to $20 additional surcharge per shipment.
Now this is in the Philippines, watch it happen soon in the US, as a way to force more urbanization and punish Red fly-over country. Dems love their commie-block apartments and urban areas.
I know Social Media Apps share my data, it’s in their TOS. They are pretty specific.
This post is about, what I believe, to be about more than what is in the TOS.
So, stop with the ridiculous responses. I want ACTUAL details from this poster.
Probably if you’re paying for it as well.
Yes, this is absolutely true. Hubby and I mentioned something very archaic, like a tape deck or something like that. Sure enough, next time he looked at the computer there were ads to buy used tape decks from Ebay (something like that). It’s all quite frightening.
Absolutely true. Your phone does spy. I had my phone in my pocket. I was on bus duty after school. I told the teacher thst I used to buy Etienne Aigner shoes long ago. When I returned to my office computer thirty minutes later those exact shoes popped up in an ad. I had never searched for those shoes online.
Naw, the sooner people get pissed off enough about all the oppression, the sooner they will rise up and kill the oppressors.
We have a lot of guns.
We aren’t violent now, because it’s just not time.
We have a media problem, social media etc.
When they come for the guns, oh boy......

IF anyone thinks this site is not being monitored, searched, etc.....go get a cup of coffee.
Your are dead straight.
I quit Facebook shortly after Obama was elected for disagreements with some of my college basketball teammates who were all for Obama and our Facebook disagreements were bad. We are still friends today and are using old school techniques and talk on the telephone. I believe personal interaction is so important for relationships. Even one former teammate who is African American admitted to voting for Trump this election😁
My wife who was a constant poster on Facebook and Twitter; she has Now deleted her accounts this week on those sites. How long this last’s, well she’s female🤣. She started on Parlor last week but that is gone for a while. Nice to have her attention for a few days!
As for Amazon, liked their service during the lock downs. Now after my entire family had and recovered from the Wuflu, we are enjoying shopping at our favorite small town stores. 🖕🏼Amazon after this week!

It’s not thedonald.com. It’s thedonald.win.
thedonald.win is up, though.
Up for what?
Thanks. I recommend watching a movie called “The Circle” with Tom Hanks. Just what you are talking about. I went offline years ago, but unfortunately my wife still loves Facebook. What is a person to do?
Find the vendors that you buy from or might want to buy from. Bookmark them. Use a master password package (app).
Duckduckgo.com will work, if you can get past enough of the search engine spam to find the vendors.
If you use the Quant search engine, you’ll get a lot of UK vendor sites, unless you use keywords to work your way around them.
For example, the keywords,
tools american made
and look down the list of hits. After getting info about the vendors, try other keywords from there to find them. Or go back to duckduckgo.com for that.
Are you a man and just want some tools, other equipment for work, clothing or other stuff? Try Northern Tool.
Have a look around there, and see what you think. They’re great to deal with, if the epidemic hasn’t slowed them down like so many others.
By the way, I ordered some things from Amazon quite a few weeks ago. Took weeks for them to ship the items, reportedly because the China virus had depleted their workforce at the time (or maybe really because I did not have Prime).
Time to shut that Amazon account down.
“Up” = online, working.
