NASA to Reexamine Nicknames for Cosmic Objects
NASA website ^ | Aug. 5, 2020 | Tricia Talbert

Distant cosmic objects such as planets, galaxies, and nebulae are sometimes referred to by the scientific community with unofficial nicknames. As the scientific community works to identify and address systemic discrimination and inequality in all aspects of the field, it has become clear that certain cosmic nicknames are not only insensitive, but can be actively harmful. NASA is examining its use of unofficial terminology for cosmic objects as part of its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

As an initial step, NASA will no longer refer to planetary nebula NGC 2392, the glowing remains of a Sun-like star that is blowing off its outer layers at the end of its life, as the “Eskimo Nebula.” “Eskimo” is widely viewed as a colonial term with a racist history, imposed on the indigenous people of Arctic regions. Most official documents have moved away from its use...

We can pretty much forget about landing on the moon again or ever going to mars.

It's pretty clear the real NASA is long gone.

I don’t think it really matters what NASA calls anything in space. Things are called what they are called by the people who do astronomy, not planetary exploration...like astronomers.

Big Brother doesn’t have to force the change.

Half the people in this country are cooperating full bore, like mindless sheep led to the slaughter.

If NASA changes these names for PC reasons, then it’s highly likely that’s what everybody is going to call them.

They still exist, we bought some the other day. But the company has announced that, after almost a century, the name is going to change.

It shows that NASA is overpaid, and without talent. Unable to come up with any substantive work, they focus their untalented attention on non-problems and busy work.

I think we could very easily zero out half of NASA without a problem. Get rid of the HR people, the affirmative action people, etc. Retain the engineers with orders to focus on real work. If they waste their time worrying about nicknames, then that is a signal that it is time for them to go.

A year 2000 version of an almanac called them “staffed” missions, not manned. The “B.C.A. - before common era” instead of “B.C.” is also in wide circulation.

It appears to me that this is a racist way of sanitizing non-whites from our culture, history, etc. I thought there was suppose to be diversity, but not of thought, not of speech, not of common terminology, etc. I like Aunt Jemima, I like Uncle Ben, I like Swiss Miss, I like the variety of faces selling products in the store. I like the variety of knowledge there is of others that is sparked by simple connections to the diversity of our world.

I think you’re getting it confused with the

Without Russia and the US business community, NASA would have nothing to do.
