designed to sound important but meaning nothing.
In the end he guaranteed the US had its peak of daily
fatalities. That was about a week ago.

We have 3 confirmed. The health authority person said there were many, many more she knew of personally with initial investigation. Without test kits, she can’t test. Thinking she told of 12-13 more and those were just the ones she was aware of so that’s 4 times as many who aren’t being counted anywhere. Then there’s an untold number roaming around she doesn’t know about.
Figure for every confirmed and gold stamped by CDC case, add at least 10 more. You’re 96 number is probably close to the correct amount.
The factor of ten is definitely in the ballpark—figure around 1% of the population is positive (or recovered from mild symptoms at this point).
We won’t have a realistic death fatality rate for _months_ imho....

I knew you were going to say that.
Trying to “classify” the germ/disease is an excellent way to learn.
This germ is new, but it IS like other things.
It came to me in the middle of the night that rather than trying to classify the germ you want to class the disease it produces. Right?
By classify, we mean going to more general comparisons. If you get on a first name basis with someone that you are tutoring you don’t need to put them in the 3rd grade class. So if classifying the germ, called SARS-CoV-2, does not work for you, maybe think of the classing of the disease, called COVID-19. From specific to general I offer the following and I hope for correction from anybody.
COVID-19, coronavirus disease which started in 2019.
SARS type pneumonia.
Upper Respiratory Disease - by virtue of the fact that this virus starts there and progresses to lower lungs this includes influenza etc.
Infectious Disease - includes everything you catch that makes you sick.
Infectious Diseases at CDC includes three big subcategories: 1) Emerging and Zoonotic Infections (the coronavirus team); 2) HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD’s and TB (the AIDS team); and 3) Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (the flu fighters).
You see immediately that there is a lot of overlap. There has to be cooperation and information sharing among all these researchers, and there is. You are absolutely right that something this new is going to resist categorization until they know more.
For the time being I assume that the emerging disease team is taking lead on this but I am curious if everybody has dropped work on all their other nightmares to devote attention to this.
When you know more about the germ, you can use an accurate scientific taxonomy. When you have a real treatment, then you can put this in the medical books where the docs can find it and treat people effectively. The very first question that the virologists on this had to deal with was naming the germ. Seems stupid, “Just call it George or something and get to work!” But naming it correctly brings all the resources and thing and focuses it together.
You can’t call this disease SARS, because it is different, but in the emergency room and in the governor’s office it may as well be. Assume for all practical purpose that it is SARS. You have no other choice.
