Giant red blob of hot sea water the size of Texas suddenly appears off the coast of New Zealand - and scientists warn it could devastate fish and coral

A hot patch of water off the eastern coast of New Zealand has created a huge red blob on heat maps as a marine heatwave sweeps the South Pacific Ocean. The blotch stretches tens of thousands of square kilometres and is one of the warmest sea spots on the planet with temperatures of up to 20C. The water is 4C degrees above the average temperature of 10 to 15C, nearing temperatures in the Tropics, which range between 20 and 30C. Professor James Renwick, a weather and climate researcher at Victoria University, said the phenomenon is caused when an area becomes concentrated with sunshine and little wind.

I thought there was a something that ate some Ohio city back in the 50s.

It’s probably a normal event after volcanic activity like they recently had.

Yeah I found the cockroach but that’s recent and probably inspired by the one I’m thinking of which was so incredibly bad there are no surviving prints or even memories.

What would be nice would be a blob eating global leftism.

“Stretches tens of thousands of kilometers”

Illiterates writing headlines.

If this is true, the “blob” pretty much covers the entire Pacific or more.

Maybe they meant to say SQUARE kilometers?

Professor Renwick said the heat wave could cause problems for local marine life if it penetrated beneath the ocean’s surface.

He said it was more likely the shallow layer of warm water, potentially up to 50m below the surface, would likely fade and dissipate in coming weeks as it heads towards South America.

Happens from time to time.

Armageddon, w/ Bruce Willis

One of the silliest movie story lines of recent history. Deep water Oil drillers are not dry hole drilling experts. (Well in the 70s some drilled a bunch of drill holes, but that didn’t make them experts)

[[4 degrees above average]]

My goodness, how will the fish ever survive a short term immersion in such a piddly temperature rise? Why they’ll boil to death in a matter of seconds, just like all mankind spontaneously combust into flames every time it goes from say 50 degrees to 54 degrees

“I thought there was a something that ate some Ohio city back in the 50s.”

Maybe you’re thinking of the “Andy Griffith Show”?

The Mayberry movie theatre would show movies with names like that. The actors would mention the titles:
The Monster from Out of Town
House of Blood
The Beast that Ate Minnesota (Goober has seen this movie 10 times)
The Monster from Mars, also called Monsters from Mars
Monsters from the Moon
The Anteaters from Outer Space

“The Monster That Devoured Cleveland” was a joke line in the old “Dobie Gillis” show. Maynard Krebs used it a lot.
