The incident occurred after the men went looking for a deer that one brother had shot earlier with a muzzle-loading rifle, reported the Ionia County Sheriff's Office on its Facebook page.

The shooter, a 29-year-old man from Saranac, told authorities that he believed he saw the deer moving and fired, but after firing realized he had struck his 28-year-old brother. He called 911 immediately for help and the two siblings walked out of the dense corn field where they were hunting and were met by first responders, reported ABC Grand Rapids affiliate, WZZM13.

Clearly a family dynamic problem -- he always felt his family fawned all over his brother as they were growing up.

One of my cousins was killed in the 70’s before the orange vest laws. He was 14 at the time. Everyone was supposed to stay in the tree stand assigned to them until noon. he got bored, and decided to walk back to the trucks. working through a thicket in a brown jacket he was shot from about 100 yds away. My uncle, his dad, mistook him for a deer and shot his own son. Needless to say it devastated him, and his family. He won’t touch a firearm now. Always triple check before firing, let that buck get away if you’re not sure, and always wear safety gear. Me, I don’t hunt with others anymore.

It begs the question... Is big game color blind or not? If so then why even try to go green? You can break up shape with orange blotches and stripes also. Bird warnings maybe?

“The brother’s name is Buck.”

He probably now thinks wearing those antlers wasn’t so funny.

The stupid reeks with this story. What you’re shooting, where the bullet will go after it passes the shooting zone, etc. the desire to fill your tag overwhelms schifftbirds. Hope the guy gets better, if I had ever done this I would never hunt again. I was 14 when I killed my first deer, my dad taught me to pay attention. Too bad more dads, uncles, and grandads don’t spend the time. Sad

After he recovers from his wounds, he'll be forever after known as Bambi's Brother.

Around 1987, I had an experience which still is a mystery. Never happened before or since, not even close.

I was driving on a dirt road in Western, KS, North West of Dodge City. I passed over a slight rise and saw a wooden bridge maybe a hundred yards ahead.

I was not hunting or even thinking of hunting but saw a beautiful buck on the bridge looking at me. Clear as a bell.

I blinked my eyes and instead of the deer, it was a man just moving off it.

When my husband began learning to hunt with his Dad - at an even younger age than you - he was made to take a course and test, during which he was instructed to ‘never shoot across a road’.

One day, he was out with his father AND the instructor, and had a clear, easy shot on a beautiful buck - across a road.

A deserted country road - but it was a road, and husband refused to shoot.

Later, both grownups teased him.

I guess the ‘thrill of the hunt’ causes even rules-oriented people to....slip, now and then :-)

I’m glad they ‘walked out of the cornfield’, and that the shot guy is ‘stable’.

And people wonder why I paint COW in orange on both sides of Evangeline.

'Evangeline'

LOL. What a lovely name for a cow.

(My father could recite the entire poem by heart - especially when drunk. He was born into times when kids were made to learn things like that...)
