NY City Diversity Committee Says Programs for Gifted Students Are 'Racist'
PJ Media ^ | 08/28/2019 | Rick Moran

A school diversity committee formed by Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to eliminate programs for gifted and talented students, claiming they perpetuate racial inequality because they’re comprised mostly of white and Asian students.

The committee also recommended scrapping all forms of screening for students across the city.

The report has no binding power, but de Blasio can implement the panel's recommendations if he wishes.

New York Post:

De Blasio only said of the report Monday, “Every child, regardless of ZIP code, has the right to attend a school where they can thrive.

“I thank the School Diversity Advisory Group for all their hard work to promote equity and excellence across our system, and I look forward to reviewing their recommendations. ”

Carranza added, “We’re going to review their recommendations and take action to ensure all students have access to a rich and rigorous education.”

After the lip service to quality education, what's really at stake here? Perhaps we should be asking about the legitimacy of these programs.

But the schools chancellor has already openly questioned the legitimacy of gifted-and-talented programs, including to a group of Queens parents in February.

“When you have over 35% of your students be designated as gifted and talented, we need to bottle the water we’re drinking and ship it all over the place,” he said sarcastically.

“Because that is far beyond the percentage of gifted and talented that, from a statistical perspective, should be found in the population.”

Backers of the current system counter that it rewards diligence and accommodates families of advanced kids who would otherwise abandon the public school system altogether.

To the left any reward for hard work and perseverance must not happen. Only the victim class can be reward with free stuff and props.

If this isn’t proof leftists are severely brain damaged then nothing is.

The left doesn’t believe in the American dream; only the radical communist dream of equally poor and stupid and of course; the elites. A caste system. This way they can use the carrot to manipulate people to do what they want but never actually deliver on their promise. It simply wouldn’t do to let low-born’s mix with high-born’s. Nope; wouldn’t do at all.

The education system has done its job. The masses are dumbed down; especially in the cities.

They think programs like this increase the disparity.

No, I don't think it's that. I think it's more like "If everyone can't be special, then no-one will be special." It hurts the feelings of the dumb kids (who happen to be largely black) and therefore we can't have hurt feelings.

The FACTS speak for themselves: far more white and Asian kids are "gifted," therefore it is an inherently racist program.

The word "gifted" really irks me. It's not like the white and Asian kids were handed a "gift" at birth, just like they weren't handed "privilege." They come from a culture that respects and reveres hard work, achievement and success and they have parents who want to hand those characteristics down to their progeny. Urban black kids come from a culture where hard work, achievement, and success are derided as "white" values, where they expect everything to be free (thanks LBJ), and pride comes from being (or acting) dumb and being a failure. That is the belief system that gets handed down generation after generation.

Until you fix black culture and rid it of those toxic beliefs, very few black kids will rise up enough to be considered "gifted."

A relative teaches at an inner city Baltimore school for exceptional kids and they try to instill the value system of success. The kids live on campus Monday through Friday and go home Saturday and Sunday. Their biggest challenge is the kids get sucked back into ghetto culture with just two days at home and they have to work the next five days to re-implant a culture of hard work, success and rewards. Taking the kids out of the 'hood five days out of seven just isn't enough to do the job.

They cannot see the irony of their own racist statement............

Everything they say about race is racist. Everything.

They honestly believe that only white people can be racist, which is the epitome of a racist belief.

The classroom is designed to move at the rate of the slower students — how else can one ensure that everyone gets an education? The problem is that now the fast students do not get where they should be going. Hence the movement to multiple tiers of classes. I taught and we had at least two tiers for a while. The advent of AP programs added a third tier. (This level allowed some kids to get college credit while in high school.)

I was selected to be in an “honors” classroom for eighth grade. This did not amount to a faster program as far as I could tell, but did leave our classroom bereft of enough students with athletic ability so that we could not compete in the school on a equal footing with the other rooms who had the coordinated kids. Oh well.

Those are mutually exclusive, because they are the opposite of each other.

Well, that’s the problem. Because they CAN perform basic daily functions, they believe they are sane. If they were as insane at tying their shoes as they are at understanding ideas, they might seek help.

The problem is, they can’t see they need help.

I have not heard this argument yet. It is one I made for a son who was extremely proficient at math in the 7th grade. The school wanted to exclude my son from the advanced math class because his 6th grade math performance was poor because he rarely turned in his homework.

We were not sure if he was gifted or just lazy so we had him tested by John Hopkins who in turn administered the SAT to him when a 6th grader. His score placed him in the top 95% of seniors with math questions that had not been taught to him yet.

My pitch to the principal of the school started with an argument that this exclusion was unfair to my child. I saw right away that the principal was not going to be persuaded with that argument so I immediately switched gears and made my appeal on behalf of the self esteem of the other kids he was going to be placed with. I said imagine the negative affect he is going to have on those average students who work hard at math while my son will ace tests without doing any work. That argument won the day and he allowed to attend the advanced classes.

likewise, imagine the negative affect these bright gifted kids are going to have on the self esteem of the average students when they are placed back in the regular classroom.

Ya know, I often think about this dislike for helping really smart people to get to their full potential. Who do these people think are going to come up with the new ideas and inventions that make our life better or help us with medical issues?

I had 2 intelligent daughters. What I discovered is that intelligent children need to be challenged. My eldest was in an Honors English class, and the teacher called her up to his desk at the end of one class and asked if she was being "challenged" enough.

These kids need a challenge because the normal stuff is just too easy for them; or, they have already learned it themselves.

We, as a society, need these people, and we need to give them the opportunity to grow and be challenged. No one would ever say that they should stop classes for the disabled, or for kids who need extra time to get an idea. But, if a kid is very intellgent, then it is racist, or (as I would hear) you are some sort of stage mother.

Our future depends on smart people figuring out complex problems.

According to the Hegelian dialectic, everything will turn into its opposite.

What was once progressive will always become politically incorrect, again & again.

Permanent revolution is necessary to keep the masses in a state of perpetual fear, thus obedient, looking always to the state for guidance.

I can remember when gifted and talented school programs— which featured gifted and talented *teachers* & much harder subjects-— were promoted for ANY students who displayed aptitude & desire to learn.

These classes were islands of true learning in a sea of public school mediocrity.
The classes were NOT racially exclusive, although a *lot* of the black kids in the program gravitated *more* toward music & arts. This was their CHOICE!

Still, there were PLENTY of gifted black kids in the maths & sciences— nobody excluded them. Those who were there, WANTED to be there, & thrived because they wanted to!

Now we’re told such programs are “racist,” and to punish white kids, we must stifle & prevent the black kids, too.
