NY City Diversity Committee Says Programs for Gifted Students Are 'Racist'
PJ Media ^ | 08/28/2019 | Rick Moran

A school diversity committee formed by Mayor Bill de Blasio wants to eliminate programs for gifted and talented students, claiming they perpetuate racial inequality because they’re comprised mostly of white and Asian students.

The committee also recommended scrapping all forms of screening for students across the city.

The report has no binding power, but de Blasio can implement the panel's recommendations if he wishes.

New York Post:

De Blasio only said of the report Monday, “Every child, regardless of ZIP code, has the right to attend a school where they can thrive.

“I thank the School Diversity Advisory Group for all their hard work to promote equity and excellence across our system, and I look forward to reviewing their recommendations. ”

Carranza added, “We’re going to review their recommendations and take action to ensure all students have access to a rich and rigorous education.”

After the lip service to quality education, what's really at stake here? Perhaps we should be asking about the legitimacy of these programs.

But the schools chancellor has already openly questioned the legitimacy of gifted-and-talented programs, including to a group of Queens parents in February.

“When you have over 35% of your students be designated as gifted and talented, we need to bottle the water we’re drinking and ship it all over the place,” he said sarcastically.

“Because that is far beyond the percentage of gifted and talented that, from a statistical perspective, should be found in the population.”

Backers of the current system counter that it rewards diligence and accommodates families of advanced kids who would otherwise abandon the public school system altogether.

Looks like NY is fast becoming a sh*thole city. Socialism is like a fly on sh*t.

1/3 of the kids in the NYC schools are “gifted.” The simplest solution is to make the “gifted” program the normal program (as it was 50 years ago) and put the dumb kids into the “retarded” program. Problem solved.

I think we’re making steady progress in this direction, however! If we weren’t, Bil DeBlasio would be unemployed.

Yep, this is bolshevik bullshit wrapped in a cloak of pseudo-intellectual clap trap. Don’t be fooled.

What they really want is a world, where you standing in life has to do with how well-connected you are, instead of on your own merits.

The “Politburo” will decide everything.

Harrison Bergeron...
In the year 2081, amendments to the Constitution dictate that all Americans are fully equal and not allowed to be smarter, better-looking, or more physically able than anyone else. The Handicapper General's agents enforce the equality laws, forcing citizens to wear "handicaps": masks for those who are too beautiful, radios inside the ears of intelligent people, and heavy weights for the strong or athletic.

One April, 14-year-old Harrison Bergeron, an intelligent and athletic teenager, is taken away from his parents, George and Hazel Bergeron, by the government. They are barely aware of the tragedy, as Hazel has "average" intelligence (a euphemism for stupidity), and George has a handicap radio installed by the government to regulate his above-average intelligence. Hazel and George watch ballet on television. They comment on the dancers, who are weighed down to counteract their gracefulness and masked to hide their attractiveness. George's thoughts are continually interrupted by the different noises emitted by his handicap radio, which piques Hazel's curiosity and imagination regarding handicaps. Noticing his exhaustion, Hazel urges George to lie down and rest his "handicap bag" 47 pounds of weights locked around George's neck. She suggests taking a few of the weights out of the bag, but George resists, aware of the illegality of such an action.

Vonnegut was off by a few years, I'm afraid.

Yup. The school chancellor seems to be stuck on semantics.

Call the top 35% whatever one wants, but let's keep those top 35% the hell away from the 65% losers.

The football and basketball coaches were not available for comment.

Libs want to keep everyone stupid.

~~~
That’s not the goal. Implied in the message is that some of the people are actually not stupid, and by having programs like this you are actually widening the gap further. IE, your promoting runaway success. I’m not coming to their defense in any way, because I think exceptionalism is a wonderful thing. But I think that it’s the disparity that they are focused on. They think programs like this increase the disparity. You have to remember that the problem is always the perceived inequity with liberals. Take wealth and income as a perfect example. To the leftist, it doesn’t matter those below the poverty line actually have a relatively high quality of life compared to much of the world, and compared to the human condition in almost all of human history. The problem is that there are others with more than them, and some with a lot more.
So yes, you are right, if everyone was made equally stupid, they’d at least see their equity or “fairness” goals accomplished.
Never forget, no one “deserves” anything, unless you are talking about an entitlement class. Everyone else, no matter how much work they put in, nor how much effort or money they invest, do not deserve anything they get.
This statement is racist. They are saying that non-white kids are not able to perform at the academic level necessary to gain entry into a Gifted program.
I was a student in gifted programs, and there were kids of various ethnicities in those classes. The ONLY qualification necessary to gain acceptance into such a program was to meet the academic standards for the program. Ah, I forgot that merit is now racist.
....how many of us Freepers remember that horrible experiment called “bussing” of the early 1970s....? how did that work out...? taking smart, mostly white kids out of their good schools and bringing them across town to attend mostly minority-populated poorly-performing schools; and taking the students in these poorly-performing schools and placing them in better performing schools... how did that all work out? It was a disaster.... as we used to say in the Navy, how fast can a convoy travel? only as fast as its slowest ship...
If gifted programs are racist, so is the basketball program.
He says “poor” kids are just as amrt as “white” kids...
You should be thankful you are just average at spelling, otherwise the Handicapper General would be paying you a visit. Nobody wants the H-G to visit.
rather than trying to raise the lower kids to become smarter or something.
It takes no skill, knowledge or effort to keep people ignorant.
It does take skill, knowledge and effort to educate them.
