Study: High-carb, low-protein diets may extend lifespan

Feb. 19 (UPI) -- A nutrient once thought to be healthy if eaten in abundance may actually cut life short, a new study says.

A low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet has been linked to living longer and maintaining brain health, according to a study published this month in Current Biology.

Eating too much protein, Proud says, can speed up protein synthesis, which quickly causes a build-up of "faulty protein" -- leading to a likelihood of early death. The researchers tested this theory by feeding high protein diets to fruit flies and worms.

"Since this link also operates in humans, our findings show how lower protein consumption could promote longevity in people," Proud said.

However, Proud not only recommends eating less protein but also more carbohydrates, which many have long-associated with an unhealthy diet.

"Carbohydrates get a lot of bad press, especially in relation to dieting, but the key is balance and knowing the difference between 'good' carbs and 'bad' carbs," Proud said.

My driver's problem was that he thought if he cut out all "carbs" from his diet and only ate massive quantities of his beloved meats and bacon that he would lose weight and make him healthier.

No reputable low-carb diet would ever recommend that approach. A healthy "low-carb" diet would still include 70-100 "net carbs" a day (after subtracting fiber from carbs). Most of those carbs will come in the form of leafy green vegetables like broccoli, brussels sprouts, kale, etc., as well as raw or sprouted nuts like almonds, pumpkin seeds, cashews, pistachios. Also legumes like beans and peanuts (but not the canned baked beans that are full of added sugar). Also, good carbs come from whole fruits like berries, apples, cherries, etc. Don't drink fruit juice however because all the good stuff like fiber is processed out and all you are getting is a concentrated sugar drink not much better than soda pop.

Added sugar is the real enemy in our diet and unfortunately some people see all carbs as "bad" when they are really not.

As a low-carber, I try to get in one good salad a day with various greens, cucumbers, peppers, tomatoes, carrots. The more colorful the salad, the better. (Just plain lettuce is not very nutritious. It is also very important to add a fat to your salad. Dressing is not good because it's basically sugar and unhealthy vegetable oil (that is oxidized as most vegetable oils are toxic when heated). Instead, use pure olive oil or vinegar. Also, it helps to put a protein in there too such as grilled chicken or a can of sardines (packed in olive oil) like I like to do. A little cheese is good too. Then sprinkle in some raw sunflower or pumpkin seeds, maybe some walnuts or almonds too. Be careful however as the calories can add up very quickly in a salad. It is not difficult at all for me to get a salad to 1,000 calories. Full of healthy stuff but still, you don't want to have that many calories (and fat) all at one time.

Too much protein is not a good thing as this article states. Still, you are probably better off adding more animal fats to your diet rather than carbs. I try to maintain daily ratio of at least 50% fat, around 30% protein and then 20% carbs.

Lastly, and this cannot be stressed enough, margarine is one of the most TOXIC substances you can put into your body (that you can buy in a supermarket). Stick with real butter. That is almost the perfect fat (besides olive oil) to cook with as well as it handles high heat very well without oxidizing like the inferior vegetable oils.

Utter nonsense. This is the media’s effort to get people to go vegetarian or vegan

Trust me. You have nothing to worry about. Having been strictly vegan myself for over 10 years I can guarantee you that the media is not supportive or on my side on this issue.

I did the Keto diet for 18 months, lost 25 pounds (in just a couple of months), which is a lot for a small woman, now have my teenage figure back, feel great, energetic, work out at gym almost daily including a 1-mile trot on the treadmill. Not bad for an 82-year=old.

Now, I do eat some sugar, the occasional ice cream, but not cake or anything with gluten. But watch the scale daily.

My dad was in the restaurant business and always insisted that we have wonderful food at home. NO JUNK FOOD. No artificial ingredients. We didn’t ha ve to worry about genetically modified food then, or about pesticides until DDT came along. He taught me to read labels as a teen and it’s served me well.

Ideally, we should avoid all GMO’s, gluten, and fruits and veggies sprayed with pesticides. Broccoli, asparagus, and cabbage-family veggies are not sprayed so do not have to be organic. Wheat is not genetically modified but it is sprayed, so try to avoid it. Rice and corn are better choices for carbs or, my fave, an organic potato.

I didn’t know weight loss would be a big concern to many firefighters. I suppose it only makes sense, they are usually big and athletic people to begin with, and they are encouraged to eat a lot of meat. As one get’s older, the metabolism often slows, so it becomes harder to stay within weight expectations. Their jobs and ability to be promoted, depend on it.

I totally agree!

I discovered that pot roast and ground hamburger purchased from the store made me feel really lousy and once I changed my eating patterns and had red meat once or twice a week, I discovered just how awful I felt after consuming beef. It doesn’t happen if I have a steak but I do agree, see what is making you feel worse and go from there. I love my feta tomatoes, garbanzo beans salad and seafood during the week. I also have one day a week which I feel the need to splurge and it helps me to keep on track during the rest of the week.

Ha!!! My grandmother used to make yogurt in the ‘60’s...no sugar. We loved it. Nowadays, the yogurt on the market is just awful, so full of sugar.

Can someone point to an “essential” carb?

Doritos.

As if it’s a function of mass action.

“Get rid of the sugar friends, it is destroying our bodies. many carbohydrates we eat turn into sugar when digested such as bread.”

Sugar and ALL REFINED CARBS are killers. To include alcohol.

However, small amounts of whole grains and all the whole fruits and vegetables you can eat AFTER your minimum protein and fats are good.

8 ounces of meat and a FULL PLATE of vegetables is a good meal for dinner.

3 eggs, Ezekiel Sprouted Whole Grain toast, sausage and an orange or apple is a good breakfast.

An 800 calorie salad with 40gr of protein is a perfect lunch.

You gots to move!

What you said. Still - some carbs are better than others (wild rice vs donuts)

No doubt it's better for you, but you could lose weight eating only donuts.

Jared only ate Subway sandwiches.

Ever notice how your diet naturally changes in winter?

Listen to your body and adjust your diet accordingly - AND if you're lucky you'll get to spend an extra 6 months in some Nursing Home drooling in your oatmeal.

I'm holding out for the ice cream and donuts health diet.

Aldi's has a pretty decent tasting controlled calories ice cream. A pint of it is only a few hundred calories. Donuts? That's depressing. Dunkin' Donuts has the food technology know-how. They could do a healthy yummy donut if they wanted to!

My current thing is that food should be fun. Like, if I get a real milk shake, I eat it with a spoon.

I take little comfort in being equated to having the same digestive capabilities and characteristics as fruit flies and worms.

It’s very simple.
Calories in - Calories out = X
X > 0 = Fat
X < 0 = Not Fat

You are correct about this of course. And getting too fat is bad for your health.

A few years ago I had appendicitis that I tried to ignore until it almost killed me. Because my appendix had been ruptured for a week before I went in, I had a considerable amount of fecal material in my abdominal cavity and a bad infection had developed. The surgeon told my wife that there was a good chance that I would not make it. To save my life they had to remove my intestines and wash them and everything else in my abdominal cavity with antibacterial cleaners and they packed me full of antibiotics.

The procedure and the antibiotics saved me, but the balance of good bacteria in my intestines was very screwed up and I had a hard time completely digesting lots of things that were not a problem for me previously. I tried taking various probiotics and various foods to reestablish the bacteria that I had before. The thing that I discovered the hard way is that you have to eat a balanced diet to feed and maintain a good balance of bacteria in your gut. That is something that seems to be missing from many of these discussions. If you do not eat a wide variety of foods the bacteria in your gut which is turns out is a very important component of health will suffer.

Many people who try to take some sort of metabolic shortcut by completely cutting carbohydrates out of their diet often lose some weight but cause suffer from other health problems as a result. Other types of unbalanced diets have bad consequences as well. The study cited in the article reaches some valid conclusions about high protein diets. Any diet that is not diverse enough to support a healthy gut genome is probably a mistake.
